- พอช่วงกลางๆ ปี 1981 Lars ได้เดินทางไปยังอังกฤษ เพื่อไปชมวง Diamond Head แสดงสด และพบกับ Sean Harris ที่เป็นนักร้องนำ และเค้าก็ขลุกตัว เรียกง่ายๆ ว่ามั่วนิ่มอยู่กับ Diamond อยู่หลายเดือน ก่อนที่จะประกาศว่า เค้าจะต้องมีวงเป็นของตัวเอง - James Hetfields เดินทางมาพบกับ Lars เนื่องจากไปพบกับประกาศรับนักดนตรีตามเสาไฟ ทั้งสองคนเริ่มสนิทกันเนื่องจากชอบดนตรีแนวใกล้เคียงกัน ก็พวก New wave of British Heavy Metal เหมือนๆกัน (ว่างๆ จะเขียนให้อ่านกันนะไอ้ NWOBHM เนี่ย) หลังจากนั้นทั้งสองคนก็ตัดสินใจจะฟอร์มวงดนตรีขึ้นโดยมีสมาชิก 2 คนแน่ะ HetfieldsเกิดปีเดียวกับLars - ในปี 1982 ทั้งสองคนก็ได้มีโอกาสทำเพลงขึ้น โดยเป็นอัลบั้มรวมฮิตร่วมกับศิลปินแถวๆ Los Angelis โดยอัลบั้มนั้นมีชื่อว่า Metal Massacre I คือเพลง Hit The Light โดยที่ Lars เล่นกลอง James เล่น Rhythm Guitar, Bass แล้วก็ร้องนำ ส่วนกีต้าร์โซโล ก็ไปดึงเอา Lloyd Grant ซึ่งเป็นเพื่อนๆ มาช่วยเล่นให้ - หลังจากนั้นไม่นาน ทางวงก็รับสมาชิกใหม่ก็คือ Dave Mustaineและ Ron McGovney มาเล่นกีตาร์โซโล และเบสตามลำดับ ปล.Mustaine เกิดปี1961 แก่กว่า Hetfields และ Ulrich 2ปี - วันที่ 28 มีนาคม 1982 Metallica ได้เล่นเป็นวงเปิดของ Saxon โดยที่ Metallica เล่นเพลงของ Diamond Head, Savage และ Sweet Savage เป็นครั้งแรกเลยนะเนี่ย - ในเดือนเมษายน 1982 พวกเค้าก็ทำเพลงขึ้นมาใหม่อีก 4 เพลงเพื่อเป็นค่ากับข้าว โดยที่ทั้งสี่เพลงนั้นก็คือ Hit the Light, The Mechanix (ตอนหลังนำมาเปลี่ยนชื่อเพลงเป็น The Four Horsemen) , Jump in the Fire และ Motorbreath Demo Album อันนี้ขายดีมากทำให้ทั้งสี่คนอิ่มหนำสำราญได้เลยล่ะ และที่สำคัญ เดโมชุดนี้ หามะได้อีกแล้วจ้า - ในช่วง 2-3 เดือนนี้ Metallica ก็รับสมาชิกเพิ่มอีกคนก็คือ Jeff Warner มาเล่น Rhythm อีกคน โดยที่พวกเค้าแต่งเพลง Metal Militia, Seek and Destroy และ Phantom Lord - ในเดือนกรกฏาคม James กับ Lars ไปเที่ยวที่ Whiskey-A-Go-Go และได้พบกับ Cliff Burton ทั้งสองคนประทับใจในการเล่นเบสของหมอนี่มาก แต่ชวนแล้วไม่ยอมมาซะยังงั้นแหละ - เดือนพฤศจิกายน 1982 พวกเค้าก็ไปเล่นเป็นวงเปิดให้กับ Y & T อีกไม่กี่วันต่อมาคือ วันที่ 29 พฤศจิกายน พวกเค้าก็ไปเล่นในคอนเสิร์ทที่ Bay Area ก็มีเพลงใหม่มาโชว์อีกก็คือ Whiplash โดยที่มีวงดาวรุ่งอีกวงก็คือ Exodus และวงนี้เอง James กะ Lars ก็ติดใจฝีมือการโซโลของ Kirk Hammett ซึ่งตอนนั้นอายุเพียง 20 ปีเองง่ะ และวันรุ่งขึ้น ก็เป็นคอนเสิร์ทครั้งสุดท้ายของ Ron - ปลายเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ Metallica ได้ต้อนรับสมาชิกคนใหม่ก็คือ Cliff Burton เข้ามาเล่นเบส ซึ่ง Cliff ได้เป็นจิ๊กซอคนสำคัญของ Metallica เลย เพราะเค้าสามารถแต่งเพลงและเรียบเรียงเพลงได้ และเริ่มทำเพลงกันเลย - เดือนเมษายน ไล่ Dave ออกจากวง และเชิญ Kirk Hammett มาเล่นแทน - 10 ถึง 27 พฤษภาคม 1983 พวกเค้าทั้งสี่คน ร่วมกันทำอัลบั้มแรก Kill 'em all - Kill 'em all วางจำหน่ายในเดือน กรกฏาคม 1983 ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นอัลบั้มแรกของพวกเค้า - ช่วง 27 กรกฏาคมถึง 3 กันยายน พวกเค้าทั้งสี่คน ก็ออกทัวร์กัน หลังจากนี้ จะเป็นเรื่องราวคร่าวๆ แล้วนะครับ - เมษายน อัลบั้มที่สอง Ride the lighting ก็ออกวางจำหน่าย โดยอัดเสียงกันที่เดนมาร์กและวางจำหยน่ายในเดือนกรกฏาคมปี 1984 ในช่วงนี้ Metallica เริ่มมีชื่อเสียงมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ พอวันที่ 17 สิงหาคมปี 1985 metallica ก็ได้รับเชิญไปเล่นในงาน Monsters Of Rock festival ที่อังกฤษ โดยเล่นประกบกับ Ratt และ Bon Jovi ซึ่ง James ได้พูดประโยคอมตะ "If you come here to see spandex and fuckin' eye make-up and all that shit and the words rock'n'roll baby in every fuckin' song, this ain't the band!". แปลเองนะ เหอๆๆ ในช่วงนี้พวกเค้าก็ออกทัวร์แล้วก็เริ่มทำเพลงในอัลบั้มที่สาม - 27 มีนาคม 1986 Master of puppets ก็ออกวางจำหน่าย ทำให้ metallica มีชื่อเสียงและโด่งดังสุดๆ - 27 กันยายน 1986 ระหว่างทางไปโคเปนเฮเกน รถบัสของพวกเค้าเสียหลักและทำให้ Cliff Burton เสียชีวิต ทางวงประกาศงดคอนเสิร์ท นับว่าเป็นการสูญเสียบุคลากรทางดนตรีอย่างใหญ่หลวง เขาตายเมื่ออายุเพียง24ปีเท่านั้น - ตุลาคม 1986 Jason Newsted จากวง Flotsam and Jetsam ก็เป็นสมาชิกใหม่ของวง - 5 กันยายน 1988 อัลบั้มสุดยอดตลอดกาลของ Metallica ก็ออกวางจำหน่าย ...And justice for all - กุมภาพันธ์ 1991 Metallica ได้รางวัลแกรมมี่สาขา Best Heavy Metal Performance จากเพลง Stone Cold Crazy ที่ cover ของวง Queen มา - 12 สิงหาคม 1991 อัลบั้มที่ขายดีที่สุดของวงก็ออกวางจำหน่าย ใช้ชื่อว่า Metallica โดยเปลี่ยนโปรดิวเซอร์มาเป็น Bob Rock ในช่วงปี 1991 -1993 Metallica ได้ออกตะเวนทัวร์รอบโลกกว่า 300 โชว์ใน 37 ประเทศ โดยที่หนึ่งในนั้น วันที่เท่าไหร่จำมะได้แล้ว เดือนเมษาหรือพฤษภาปี 1993 ที่สนามไทย-ญี่ปุ่นดินแดง สาวกกระโหลกเหล้กชาวไทยก็ได้ชมสุดยอดคอนเสิร์ทของ Metallica คนกว่า 30000 คน แน่นเอี๊ยด ไม่มีการตีกันเลย เหอๆๆ หลังจากนั้นทางวงก็ได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นเจ้าพ่อแห่ง Thrash Metal โดยที่ไม่มีใครกล้าเถียง แม้แต่ Megadeth ที่นำโดย Dave Mustaine ก็ยังยอมรับ เด็กหนุ่มจากหลายที่รวมทั้งประเทศไทยก็เริ่มหัดเล่นเพลงของพวกเค้า และหลายๆ วงก็ได้พวกเค้าทั้งสี่คนมาเป็นแม่แบบในปัจจุบัน แต่....
