A death in Nan
A couple of days ago a guy was killed in Nan. He was strung up near the bridge, right in front of the police box, and, depending on who you talk to - I'm relying on other people's stories as I was in Phayao at the time - had his throat cut and was set on fire too...
At home there'd be a moral outrage, and a ton of questions. Why was a guy killed right in front of the very place where where he is supposed to be protected. Who killed him ?
There'd be a murder enquiry too. Killings (for whatever reason) have to be investiagted by the police.
Here, people find reasons to justify it. He was a drug dealer. He was from Chaing Rai (or, depending on who you listen to) Phayao. He was a bad person. It's almost as if they think he deserved to die. Then, as soon as they've finished with the juicy bits, which they talk about the same way as they would talk about the storylines in a Thai soap, almost as if it's something distant from them, something not real... they quickly change the subject.
I doubt anyone will look into what happened. The news didn't even make the English newspapers in Bangkok. One guy died... a guy who wasn't even from here. People die everyday. The Thai language newspapers usually have their fair share of gruesome death stories each day. Maybe this was one too many. It's not seen as being important.
A couple of weeks ago, the Thai prime minister mentioned that Taksin's 'war on drugs' would start again. Whether it was really a 'war on drugs' (as Taksin, then prime minister declared), or a blatent excuse for the police and Taksin's allies to kill anyone who they viewed as a threat to them, depends upon who you talk to. I don't know. I was in Engalnd at the time.
All I know do know is that hundreds of people were killed, and that the majority of the deaths were never investiagted.
Maybe, like in Nan, a couple of days ago, people found their own reasons to justify the kilings, then did their best to forget about them. I guess some people, the friends and families of the people who lost their lives, will never be able to.
One person after telling me bits of the story (they missed out the bits about the body being burnt and the throat slit - all they said was that the guy got killed) told me not to be scared.
I'm not - at all. Very little scares me nowadays. But I guess we all should be... Not scared of being the next victim, or being killed, but scared of how much power the people in power really have... and scared of how, should they choose to, they can use it.
