"September 11" is no longer just a date when I hear it. It has too huge a meaning. This morning when I turned over the front page of the NY Times to read the articles inside, I was surprised.
Anyone who reads the NYT regularly knows that the first spread is usually full of ads from top brands - Gucci, Tiffany, Cartier...you name it. This morning, they were there but almost all were in plain black and white with short messages. I looked closely and realized that instead of advertising their products, they used the space to convey a message in remembrance of the 9/11 incidence.
I read every single message slowly, from top to bottom:
"A day to remember and reflect"...Tiffany & Co "In Remembrance"...Saks Fifth Avenue "We Pause to remember"...Lord & Taylor "In Memoriam"...bloomingdales "Remembering 9-11-01"...Cartier ...and so on
Seeing these giant brands putting their profits aside and joining hands in expressing a memoriam message is quite something. I was moved and in an odd way, felt a strong presence of community.
Of all these ads, there was one in particular that I like as it captures how I feel about 9/11 the best. It's the one from Brooks Brothers...
"We remember those we lost. We honor those who protect. We look toward the future with hope."
The atmosphere in the city today is certainly a sentimental one. I can understand how one can't help but remembering what happened on this day six years ago. How could you forget the attack, the desperation and the tragic loss of that scale? I can't help but wonder in several decades or a hundred years from now, how this day will be remembered. Though one thing for sure, I don't want it to happen again. God bless them.
