Lupita Gonzalez wins international title for Mexico
, Sept. 6 - Lupita Gonzalez, Miss Mexico, won the title of Miss Continente Americano (American Continent) 2008 during a special ceremony held at the Simon Bolivar Convention Center in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on September 6th. The contest was broadcast live to the whole country through Gamavision.
Gonzalez, who was 2nd runner-up or "suplente" in the Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2007 pageant, also won the Miss Photogenic trophy, and the "Mejor Rostro Yanbal (Most Beautiful Face)" award.
She was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Marianne Cruz of the Dominican Republic (also 2nd runner-up of Miss Universe 2008).
The first runner-up was Miss Puerto Rico, Kristina Ruisanchez; and the 2nd runner-up was Miss Ecuador, Domenica Saporitti.
Completing the Top 6 finalists were the contestants from Brazil (Cynthia de Oliveira), Venezuela (Andrea Matthies) and Peru (Karol Castillo).
Peru won the Best National Costume award, and Canada (Samantha Tajik) was awarded Miss Congeniality.
Astrid Carolina Herrera, Miss World 1984 from Venezuela, and Hernan Zajar, Colombian designer, were among the judges.
The winner gets about US$6000 in cash and prizes. The top three finalists will travel to the Galapagos Island this monday.
20 contestants competed in the 3rd edition of Miss Continente Americano. Seven of them have previously competed in Miss Universe 2008 (Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru and Uruguay); one of them competed in Miss World (Costa Rica) and one of them competed in both Miss International and Miss Tourism Queen International (Chile). For the rest, it was their very first international contest.
Lupita Gonzalez' victory is one of many accomplishments of the 15 years of the Nuestra Belleza Mexico Organization, headed by former Miss Universe Lupita Jones.
Mexico was 4th runner-up in Miss Universe 2008; 2nd runner-up in Miss World 2007, and Priscila Perales is the reigning Miss International.
