Chinese experts will assist the Royal Thai Navy in upgrading 4 Chinese-built Chao Phraya class frigates with the YJ-82 (export designation C-802) anti ship missiles, a Chinese official said friday. The Thai frigates carry eight C-801 SSM, two 100 mm/56 DP (1 in last two), foul dual 37 mm AA, two RBU-1200 ASW rockets. The Thai Navy will be replaced the C-801 with C-802 SSM with in next 2 years. The upgrade program also includes installation of new fire-control systems, air/surface search radars, long-range air search radars, electronic warfare systems and electronic equipment. A military source said that the Thai Navy will sign a $ 70 million contract with as soon as the Thai cabinet approves the navy development plans. The source also said that the Thai Navy wants to improve underwater warfare and air warfare combat system performance. There have been unconfirmed reports that MK 32 Mod 5 (2 triple) torpedo tubes and a launched variant of the LY-60 SAM would be fitted on the frigates if the funds are available.
