A Dog looking out for its afternoon nap
มีหมาตัวหนึ่ง กำลังมองหาที่สำหรับการนอนของตนในตอนบ่าย

jumped into the manger of an ox
มันได้กระโดดเข้าไปในรางหญ้าของวัว

and lay there cozily up on the straw.
แล้วก็ขดตัวนอนลงไปในรางนั้น

But soon the ox, returning
from its afternoon work, came up to the manger
ทว่าไม่นานนัก  เมื่อวัวซึ่งกลับมาจากการทำงานในตอนบ่าย

and wanted to eat some of the straw.
ก็ได้เข้ามาที่รางหญ้า เพื่อที่จะกินฟางข้าว

The dog in a rage, being awakened from its slumber,
หมาถูกทำให้ตกใจตื่นขึ้น ก็เดือดดาลไม่สบอารมณ์

stood up and barked at the ox,
มันยืนขึ้นเห่าวัว

and whenever it came near attempted to bite it
และเมื่อวัวเข้ามาใกล้รางมันก็จะกัด

At last the ox had to give up the hope of getting at the straw
สุดท้ายวัวก็เลิกที่จะเข้าไปกินฟาง

and went away.
มันจึงเดินออกไปจากที่แห่งนั้น



นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า

คนบางคนมีนิสัยชอบหวงไปเสียทุกอย่าง
แม้ของสิ่งนั้นไม่มีประโยชน์แก่ตน
แต่ก็ไม่ยอมให้คนอื่นเอาไปใช้ประโยชน์บ้าง
จึงเกิดเป็นคำพังเพย "หมาในรางหญ้า" และ "หมาหวงก้าง" ขึ้น
