5 TYPES OF TEAK IN INDIA 2012

Five subtypes of teak are recognized based on rainfall (very dry, semi -moist , moist and very moist ) and other edaphic and biotic factors. A study of distributionof these 5 types on the country s map shows that each of these typesoccurs in several large as well as tracts widely separated from one another and at places adjoining thetracts of other types-obviously with in each of these types , there may beseveral provenances. Further variations have been observe in the time flowering , seed ripening , number offruits per unit weight , morphological variations of from , texture of leaves ,resistance to diseases , rate of growth , timber quality.

Teak has wide but discontinuous distribution in India. Teakvaries greatly from locality to locality in timber characteristics such ascolour , grain, texture and figure. In Seoni , Kankee and parts of Bastar inMashya Pradesh , the timber is golden yellow in colour with the heartwood blendingin to sapwood. In Khariar division, teak timber is known to have good decorative grains. Teak timber of Chandrapuris well known in India markets for its colour and texture. Teak wood ofGodavari valley in Andhra Pradesh is highly priced for furniture and cabinetmaking for its ornamental figuring.
