Khun ying is a prefix name of woman to indicate a title (of nobility). The words Khun ying as used in government is divided into two types in accordance with Royal Decree providing prefix title names to women of BE 2460.
The first type is given to the primary wives of husbands bearing the title Phraya. This title is above that of Phra which is itself higher than Luang. This category of woman has never been conferred with any type of decoration (medal) and has no right to being honored with a royal auspicies funeral after passing.
The second type [of khun ying title] is to those women who have been conferred with royal decoration (medals) Chulchomklao (Inside sic?)from fourth degree Chulachomklao to second degree Thutichulachomklao.
In addition to this, the words Khun ying are used in speech for those who have nobility by birth. Monratchawongse ying, for example, MRW Kalaya (Jitraphongse) Tingpatti, can be called Khun Ying Kalaya.
