Caves and tunnels have always been part of human life. We've grown more adept at shaping these underground shelters and passages over the millennia, and today we dig for hundreds of reasons. We excavate to find both literal and cultural treasures, digging mines and unearthing archaeological discoveries. We use caverns for stable storage, for entertainment, and for an effective shelter from natural and man-made disasters. And as the planet's surface becomes ever more crowded, and national borders are closed, tunnels provide pathways for our vehicles and for smugglers of every kind. Collected below are more recent subterranean scenes from around the world.
ถ้ำพระยานคร เป็นถ้ำขนาดใหญ่อยู่ห่างจากชายหาดแหลมศาลาประมาณ 430 เมตร ในเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติเขาสามร้อยยอด จ.ประจวบคีรีขันธ์ เพดานของถ้ำมีปล่องโดยธรรมชาติให้แสงสว่างลอดลงมา รอบถ้ำเป็นป่า มีต้นไม้สูง ถ้ำพระยานครถูกค้นพบเมื่อประมาณ 200 ปีมาแล้วโดยพระยานครผู้ครองเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชในขณะนั้น ขณะที่นั่งเรือแล้วเจอพายุจึงนำเรือเข้าฝั่งเพื่อหลบพายุแล้วมาอาศัยอยู่ภายในถ้ำนี้เป็นเวลาหลายวัน .. ปัจจุบันภายในถ้ำมี พระที่นั่งคูหาคฤหาสน์ ซึ่งเป็นพลับพลาจตุรมุข สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 เมื่อเสด็จประพาสถ้ำพระยานครในปี พ.ศ.2433 .. ต่อมารัชกาลที่ 7 เสด็จประพาสถ้ำพระยานครในปี พ.ศ.2469 ซึ่งมีลายพระหัตถ์ของทั้งสองพระองค์ปรากฏอยู่ที่ผนังถ้ำ .. พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลปัจจุบันเสด็จประพาสถ้ำพระยานคร 2 ครั้งเมื่อปีพ.ศ. 2501 และปีพ.ศ. 2524 .. ประชาชนชาวจังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ จึงถือว่าถ้ำพระยานครมีความสำคัญต่อจังหวัดเป็นอย่างยิ่ง จึงนำรูปพระที่นั่งคูหาคฤหาสน์เป็นตราสัญลักษณ์ประจำจังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์
