วันที่ 6 มิถุนายนนี้จะครบรอบ 100 ปีเกิดของนักคิดคนสำคัญแห่งศตวรรษที่ 20 Isaiah Berlin เห็นข่าวบ้านเกิดของเขาที่ลัตเวียได้จัดงานนิทรรศการรำลึกเนื่องในโอกาสนี้ด้วย
บทความที่โด่งดังที่สุดของเขา "The Hedgehog and the Fox" ได้ยกคำของกวีชาวกรีกที่บอกไว้ว่า "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." เบอร์ลินแบ่งยอดนักคิดนักเขียนเป็นสองประเภท พวกแรกคือ fox ที่รอบรู้มากมายหลายสิ่ง เช่น อริสโตเติล, เชคสเปียร์, เกอเธ่, จอยซ์ ฯลฯ พวกสองคือ hedgehog บุคคลที่เข้าใจสิ่งที่ลึกซึ้งยิ่งใหญ่ เช่น เพลโต, ดันเต, ดอสโตเยฟสกี้, พรูสต์ ฯลฯ

Churlish resentment of high culture comes from the slacker's desire for reward with neither merit nor effort: the sort of artistic skill that requires years of discipline and sacrifice is a reproach to the indolence of the popular audience of the West. Better voices than Boyle's can be found in a thousand choirs and amateur theatricals, but the crowd has embraced this late-hatching Scottish songbird as a symbol of its own aspirations.
ส่วนตัวผมไม่สนใจติดตามชมรายการประกวดร้องเพลงประเภทนี้ ไม่สนใจว่าใครคือ Susan Boyle ผมคิดว่าผู้เขียนบทความเปรียบเทียบผิดเวที เขาไม่สามารถเอานักร้องประกวดเวทีนี้ไปเปรียบกับนักร้องดนตรีคลาสสิค และการประกวดร้องเพลงแบบนี้ไม่ได้มีเฉพาะโลกตะวันตก มันมีทุกที่ไม่ว่าจะเป็นจีน, ญี่ปุ่น, เกาหลี, ฮ่องกง, ไทย ฯลฯ

In China, as I observed in a recent essay (China's six-to-one advantage over the US, Asia Times Online, December 2, 2008), nearly 40 million children study classical piano, and another 15 million or so learn to play stringed instruments. Nearly 60 million young Chinese in all are learning Western classical music, and learning it the hard way, under teachers who demand mastery of technique, paid by parents who have scraped together tuition and demand regular practice. Sixty million is a big number, considering that there are only 30 million Americans aged five to 18. Of these, perhaps 5 or 6 million study piano, but few with the intensity of their Chinese counterparts."

This isn't a global problem. I would genuinely be excited to see Coetzee, Roth, Toni Morrison, Anne Tyler, E L Doctorow, Michel Houellebecq, Jonathan Frantzen, Jeffrey Eugenides, Bernard Schlink, Cormac McCarthy, Don DeLillo or Chuck Palahniuk at Hay because they have written not just good, but important books. In my view, no English novelist can make that claim, perhaps not since Golding with Lord of the Flies, or perhaps even before that, with Orwell's 1984
There are great writers out there. But none of them are English, or at least writing about the English experience
English literature has lost touch with an important part of its function: to tell us who we are, where we are going and to help us understand our lives.
