Finally- I got it

Thank you everyone for your support. I much appreciate all your friendly encouragement and later congratulatory words. My admittance proves that everything can happen if you work hard and have true determination and passion (with little help from invisible forces like pray/meditation / Dewada / god/goddess / Samathi and so on). I promise that I will keep my words and will bring the best for the betterment of research and development in the field of education for our beloved country.

Yesterday was one of my happiest days since I came to Chicago. I am so happy that I can make my parents proud of me and happy for my step-by-step success. They are so happy for me and I love them so much. I have been so elated and euphoric that I could not concentrate on my works (always a lazy guy in any circumstances).

I will give a bit of details about it in case you are interested to know. You can also read from an impassioned account from Prow's diary.

1. Normally this program will admit only 2 students / year but this year they admit 4 students since they got extra funding.

2. Professor said I will get full tuition plus 4 years of stipend ( a moderate amount for such expensive area) but for first year I will have to work for him 10 hrs/week (less than hours I am working for Townsend right now)

3. Professor told me to take Price Theory class and Econometrics next quarter from Econ dept. He thinks that my math background is already okay (but I know in fact, it’s my weakest link.)

4. I got lucky because my Chicago-educated professor is undeterred by my low GPA to let me in since he understands full well how grade-deflated Chicago has been. (mostly I got B+ and B+ =3.3, so I cannot compete with those 3.8, 3.9 types if judged on the numerical ground)

5. I can transfer some credits from Chicago, then it will take me about 3.5 years to finish if I want to. So it's good that I won't waste my years at Chicago.

6. Chicago is always the greatest school in my thought. It's the quintessence of scholarly institution/ the ideal 'plato's university' where ideas are valued and discussed seriously like no other places do. Reasons are, I just want to experience something new, to change environment, to move to a place of milder climate where I can run 365 days/ year..and most importantly to study in more relaxing, laid-back Calif environ :)

Still, I have some worries to live up to professor's expectation. So I need to be well-prepared for subjects like real analysis, advanced micro theory, econometrics, mathematics as the program is very small and I don’t want to be detected easily soon after as a not-so-smart-graduate student (though in reality I am far from being smart and sharp…at least by Chicago yardstick)

I feel I am ready to be educated and trained to be a good labor economist / economist of education from this moment on.

I will study Woodridge and GREENE in this spring break!!! (promise to myself !!!)

Wooldridge เป็นตำราเบื้องต้นทางEcono ที่ดีมากนะครับ ในความคิดผมเหมาะแก่การอ่านทวน ส่วนGreene เป็นอะไรที่เต็มกลืนจริงๆแต่ผมคิดว่าคุณพิงค์เคอร์ตันคงอ่านเล่มนี้อย่างสบายๆครับ

และมีอะไรในเมืองไทยรอคุณพิงค์เคอร์ตันกลับมาทำเยอะครับหลังจบกลับมา

Actually, I studied both textbooks already krub. I like Wooldridge as much as I hate Greene krub hehehe. But I think I will review them again :)

I need to emphasize on micro/econometrics stuff.

ก็รอให้ปิดเทอมใหญ่ก่อนครับ แล้วก็ summer ก็คงกลับไทยสองสามเดือน :))) ไม่ได้กลับไทยมาสองปีแล้ว (แต่รู้เรื่องเมืองไทยดีกว่าอยู่ไทยอีกนะ เกาะหน้าจอคอม manager ทุกวัน)

ขากลับก็คงบินไปซานฟรานเลย ไม่มาชิคาโกแล้ว (ฮืออๆๆๆๆๆ)

แต่ดีอย่างอยู่แถวนั้น คนไปเที่ยวเยอะ คิดว่าคนน่าจะเที่ยวซานฟรานมากกว่าชิคาโก ก็คงจะพอได้เจอเพื่อน ๆ แวะเวียนไปบ้างแหละครับ

The "other" school? Uhm ... welcome to California anyhow. Not sure if it's what I think it is ... (not that I care much about the schools' reputation lol)

Living not too far from the bay area and having quite a bit of friends there (San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Berkeley), it's just amazing that I don't get to visit the area that often as one might think.

It can be rather chilly though (so I wouldn't be too sure about a year-round run) even if some may argue that this doesn't compare to the Midwest or the Northeast.

I am excited about the thought of living in Bay Area, as a tourist, I enjoyed the environment there so much that I've always wanted to go back. It's such a contrast to life here. But I know I will miss snow, wind and the seriousness of Chicago.

I went to SF during the coldest season of the year but I think it's still okay to run there. It could not be called chilly by Chicago standard (but yes, it's quite cold)
