My Life in Bangkok

In the past couple of days I fell asleep around 5 pm just before dust and woke up in the middle of the night at 11 pm or 1 am and stayed eyes wide-open. It was not until last night that my life-clock has started to adapt itself appropriately; I went bed at midnight and woke up at 5 am. Thanks to a yummy Japanese dinner at J-avenue in Soi Tonglor with friends (some famous guys from bloggang/pantip as well..but I don't want to divulge their identities here yet).

So here are some details about my life & time in BKK in case you are curious to know.

1.Wake up shortly before 6 am.

2. Running from 6 am to 7 am around moo-baan--I will try to increase the time/distance gradually. On the first few days, it has been so hard to run just 30 mins! The weather is incredibly hot and humid, not to sound like a pretentious western-educated-who-just-return-home-type but I could barely breathe because of the hot weather (admittedly it is still better than the frigid Chicago weather that I could not run at all). Little by little, I hope I can adjust myself and my body, a good sign is today I could run 1 hour continuously although felt so much exhausted afterwards.

3. Pray and meditate around 1 hour after coming back from running and taking shower. It clears my mind and makes me feel secure with my life (and after life). Thailand is the best place on Earth for this because here we have a lot of great monks who are the masters of Buddhist practice that we can learn from them. I feel better spiritually doing it here than doing it in USA.

4. After this is my free time. I read some books, go out to bookstores in front of the villa ( B2S The Mall ) linger there but hardly buy any book as the price is expensive, much more expensive than it was 2 years ago. Thai government should do something about this. Without the cheap, affordable books, it is hard for Thai people to be knowledgeable and to transform Thailand to be a knowledge-based society.

5. There are many things I plan to do during my stay here.

They are 1) learn to play golf when I go back to my upcountry home because my house there is in walking distance from the golf course. Feel like a bit faking to be ‘hiso’ but it is a good way to learn some basic lesson so that I can make full use of the cheap (for student) and beautiful school Golf course.

2) I try to study and refresh some Econ / Econometrics…they are not a genial dear friend of mine but I need to learn to live with them (and love them) in order to be successful in my career (yes, I feel like PhD is a career, at least the school pays students to study.. it’s a better paid job than my former one in Thailand..actually). My responsibility is not to flunk out and to produce some knowledge that people in the profession can make use of (sounds like an ambitious goal hmm)

- Tee & Por gave me a book as a graduation gift. It's called 'The Political Economy of Education Implicatinos for Growth and Inequality'. It's a nice little book that I hope to finish it soon.

- I just went to CU bookstore yesterday and bought some econometrics textbooks ( the indispensable ones like Greene and etc that I did not buy in Chicago, the price in Thailand is incredibly cheap)

3) I might be in a monkhood for a certain period, maybe 1 month, but I am not sure of the possibility/ availability as my father does not like the idea. But it is certain that I will go for meditation retreat for 7 days or more. More than one round if possible. I will try to bring my parents / brother with me as well. I feel this thing has helped me in the past with many occurrences in my life. So it is beneficial to keep doing it. It is a truly good deed. And to attain an inner peace is one of my life goals. The highest goal of my life, indeed.

So you know about my life now. I wish you luck and success for all of your pursuits. Let’s keep in touch. Please call me or contact me if you come back to Thailand by the address in my homepage.

Hi Noi,

Yep, back to basic...I just bought a new edition of Gujarati too.

P.S. Khun Absoluteyellow wants to ask you about PhD in B-school, so I give him your anonymous yahoo email, maybe you should check from that account if you have time. Good luck for your pre-lim, I am sure you will pass it.

Hope everbody is having a great time.

Hello K.BF,

Just want to recommend Verbeek's "A guide to Modern Econometrics". It attacks advanced stuffs, but in words. ... I like it a lot.

Not sure whether are there any copies in Thailand.
