I had attended seminar classes when I was a doctoral student at university in Japan. However, this time I change the role to be a guest speaker for doctoral students.
16 January 2010, I was invited to be a guest speaker for doctoral students' seminar class on the topic "Marketing Strategy". When I knew that I was assigned to lecture for this topic, I thought about what issues I should pick up to lecture for 6-hour seminar class. Because lecture would take many hours, if a guest speaker lacks of teaching skill...listeners are likely to feel sleepy.
Umm...Doctoral seminar class!!! Doctoral students are not young. If I teach what they had known already...seminar class is not fun indeed.
I took around a month for teaching preparation to make sure that students will get useful knowledge and they will follow me without boring.
A seminar class for doctoral students started at this room....
I wanted to make atmosphere of seminar class as the place where students and lecturer participate, share and exchange their ideas.
I started to explain what is the definition of "Marketing Strategy"--Organization utilize limited resources to create sustainable comparative advantage and customer satisfaction as well.
Key success of doing business is how to make customer satisfaction and create loyalty to products or services of organization. They come back to repeat sale and ignore products of other competitors. If you can keep customer loyalty toward organization, no matter what type of your business...you are likely to be success.
Some students asked me from time to time whereas I was teaching. I explained to them by picking up my work experience and some case studies. Exchange ideas with students helped me gained new ideas which are different from my opinion.
It is not necessary for teacher to be right all the time. When we open our mind, we may find some new ideas.
Good teacher should be a good listener too, shouldn't he?
Seminar class for doctoral students ended with fun for both students and I. Students wanted to know how hard time I experienced before I was awarded doctoral degree.
I spent additional time from schedule without any additional charge telling my doctoral student life in Japan to them. In additional, they wanted to know about "Integrated Crisis Management" concept which I would lecture on January 23 because their seminar class schedule was overlapped with a seminar class for MBA students.
I emphasized that we should not focus crisis management process for only reactive process. On the other hand, we can avoid a crisis by initiating prevention mechanism before a crisis occurs. We can learn from crisis experience and emergency drills how to improve their crisis prevention mechanism. Even if they cannot avoid a crisis, they can control the degree of damage after a crisis occur if they prepare in advance how to control a crisis and how to return to normalcy. When they know step by step how to control a crisis, it is likely to control loss from a crisis as much as possible. We can explain why the degree of damage is high and it takes time before it recovers to normalcy. Why? Because they do not prepare in crisis reponse in advance.
I spent many years doing research about "Comparative Integrated Crisis Management between business organizations in Thaiand and Japan", it will not be useless if I have a chance to present this concept to audiences.
Thanks to Naresuan University for giving me a chance to lecture this topic to the new local generation. If some of them pick up contents that they learned from my seminar class and apply to their work and it can help them to control the damage from a crisis, I regard that my attempt of crisis management research will not be wasteful.
A man will be happy when he works what he likes.
When he has a chance to do what he likes....happiness from doing what he likes will lure him to do that work for long time without boring. No matter how many times he works what he likes, he is always happy.
However, are there any people who have a chance to do what he really likes?
I tried to discover myself which job I really like?
It seems that I found myself for long time but it was not the right time to work for what I really like. Therefore, I had to do something even though it is not my favorite thing. No choice except to endure to do it.
But endurance of people has limitation.
Capability of endurance of people varies.
I select to transfer my experience, my knowledge and ideas to the new generation. I like to learn and search through my life. I prefer to work for the job which allow me to discuss and exchange ideas with different people. Such kind of job is best fit with my characteristics.
Finally, from now on I decided to be a lecturer who teach and develop students to be quality human resources for local, society and country. As one part of society, if I can contribute to make society to be well being and develop society into the right direction, I regard that my duty as human being is complete!!!
After it took more than 3 months for lecturer recruitment process, Naresuan University selected me as a lecturer of Faculty of Management and Information Sciences.
On the first Monday of February, I started working at Naresuan University by wearing my ideal working attire (short-sleeve shirt without necktie). This is the first time that I have freedom to wear what I want to wear without any code of conduct for working attire.
I found a "Kalapapruek" tree opposite to Faculty of Social Sciences by chance, it is blooming. Its petals are similar to petals of 'Someyoshino Sakura' trees in Japan which always bloom in early of Spring.
From now on, my duty is educating the new generation to become good quality people for local communities, society and country.
