Done deal! Thomas Vermaelen signs a five-year-contract with Barcelona Barcelona have officially signed Thomas Vermaelen on a five year contract from Arsenal.
The deal to bring the Belgian defender to Spain is believed to have cost around £15 million.
Vermaelen decided to leave Arsenal this summer after falling down the pecking order at the club, becoming unsettled at his lack of playing time.
Manchester United were also in the hunt for the defenders signature but after negotiations broke down with Arsenal, Barcelona swooped.
The club released a statement about Vermaelen on their website: Thomas Vermaelen is a natural leader who has already captained both Ajax and Arsenal despite being a relative youngster. He plays at centre back, and as well as having an impressive physique he is excellent with the ball at his feet and reads the game well. He turned pro at Ajax when he was just 19, and after winning several major honours in Holland, he then made the move to the English Premiership.
