Man United bid £10m for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen
Rumours of Manchester United making a move for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen have been rife for some time.
Vermaelen was Arsenal captain last season but has struggled for first team opportunities as a result of the Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny central defensive partnership.
New Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is understood to be keen to bring Vermaelen to Old Trafford and the Star Sunday report that a second bid is imminent.
Despite the golf and cricket this weekend, the Star Sunday lead with the news that Manchester United have bid 10 million pounds for Vermaelen, having seen their initial bid rejected.
There were suggestions recently that Arsenal would sell Vermaelen if they could bring in a replacement in exchange from United, with Chris Smalling suggested as a makeweight in the deal.
After Arsenal’s 2-0 pre-season friendly win over Boreham Wood on Saturday, Arsene Wenger refused to confirm Thomas Vermaelen’s future at the club.
In addition, Vermaelen was spotted on holiday with Robin van Persie earlier this week.
