377. วิหารมหาอองมเยมอนซาน (Maha Aung Mye Bon Zan Monastery) / (Me Nu Oak Kyaung) เมืองอังวะ (Inwa)

This monastery was built to a more traditional specification. Although it is made of brick and stucco, it’s reminiscent of an ancient wooden structure, bringing to mind the Burmese art of woodcarving.

Well preserved brick monastery from the Konbaung dynasty. The Maha Aung Mye Bonzan Monastery is a fine example of Burmese monastery architecture during the Konbaung dynasty. The monastery, also known as the Brick Monastery is a well preserved building in ochre color. The very ornate structure is decorated with intricate stuccoed sculptures. The Maha Aung Mye Bonzan Monastery was built by Queen Me Nu, wife of King Bagyidaw of the Konbaung dynasty in 1818 as the residence of the Royal Abbott.
It is also known as Me Nu Oak Kyaung which translates to Me Nu's brick monastery. During those days it was customary for monasteries to be build out of wood. Most wooden monasteries and Palaces have been destroyed by fires or have been very badly weathered. The brick monastery was built in the same style as the wooden monasteries of its time. It has a multi tiered roof and its stucco ornamentations look like wood carvings that wooden monasteries were decorated with. An inner passage way leads through the monastery building. Inside are several Buddha images.
Two large Chinthe's, the Burmese mythological lions, protect the entrance, as is the case with most Burmese temples. On the grounds of the monastery are a number of white stupas in different sizes topped with golden hti's, a spire ornament in the shape of an umbrella. The monastery was damaged during the large 1838 earthquake and was renovated four decades later.

The monastery is located in Innwa on the East bank of the Irrawaddy river, just South of Amarapura and some 20 kilometers from downtown Mandalay. The monastery is found a few hundred meters South of the Irrawaddy river in Innwa town.

You can get to Innwa by private taxi from Mandalay or by boat from Sagaing across the river. To get around in Innwa you can hire an oxcart used as taxi.

Bagaya Kyaung, Ava 1834
This teakwood monastery (Kyaung) also served as a royal palace. The tower seen here is secular architecture. Another example is in the Royal Palace in Mandalay. A different type of tower, the watchtower, can be found at the Outer Wall in Mandalay's Royal Palace compound

The Nga Htat Gyi pagoda in Yangon is known for its enormous seated image of the Buddha.
The pagoda is located in the Ashay Tawya Monastery, a little visited temple across the street from the Chauk Htat Gyi pagoda that houses a highly revered 65 meter long reclining Buddha image.
A flight of stairs leads to the temple grounds. A gate with a very ornately decorated five tiered Burmese Pyatthat roof, topped with a hti is guarded by two large white and gold mythological lions called Chinthe.

The Nga Htat Gyi Buddha image is housed in a large iron pavilion. Its golden dome is topped with a multi tiered hti, an ornamental spire shaped like an umbrella. The walkway to the temple is adorned with murals, including depictions of Buddhist Hell, where sinners receive punishments for their sins.
Seated on a pedestal with the back towards an ornately carved wooden screen is the very large white Nga Htat Gyi image in Royal regalia wearing a golden robe. The image which is also known as the “five storey Buddha” measures nearly 14 meters high. The Nga Htat Gyi Buddha image in the Bhumisparsha mudra of “Calling the Earth to witness” was built in 1900. An image measuring about 6 meters tall is believed to have been in the temple in the 16th century.
One of the pavilion’s walls contains a painting of the Buddha with a long line of followers dressed in red robes. At the right end of the picture a number of statues of disciples seem to emerge from the painting. A large bell hanging down from the pavilion’s ceiling is held by a Naga snake, a mythological animal believed to protect Buddhism.
Other structures on the grounds include several smaller pagoda’s and the kuti, the monks living quarters.

The pagoda is located on Ngar Htat Gyi Pagoda street in the Bahan township of Yangon, just across the street from the Chauk Htat Gyi pagoda.
