When I've wanted to get rid of something in my house, I quickly assess which of three categories it belongs in:
- It's worthless - Take it down the dump!
- It has value, but not much to be bothered with and someone will find it useful - Charity shop it.
- It has value and I would like to get a bit of money for it - Sell it on eBay or Amazon.
You must be honest with yourself and make a quick (within a minute) decision about each item. The mantra that I always use is 'Is it easily replaceable?' - This quickly enables me to get rid of lots of things. With the advent of internet shopping and so on, it's so easy to get something back, even old or secondhand things!
A lot of books that I kept fell into this category and I suddenly thought that I could get and re-read a lot of them in the library for free at anytime. Obviously, some special books may not be replaceable so the mantra is always a good one to have.
The next thing I turned my attention to was CD's. This is a particular difficult area to deal with because we all become 'attached' emotionally to our music collection and to cull it would seem criminal.
So, I would pick up a CD and ask 'When did I last play this?' If it was more than a year or so, then I asked myself whether I really want to keep it? - Again, the mantra was 'Is it easily replaceable?'
I replace my CD's with.mp3's on my computer or iPhone. I listen to them much more this way and I'm afraid I no longer want to read sleeve notes! - I have better things to do.
Other items like that old coffee table that Aunt Maud gave you in the eighties, you need to let go of it. Aunt Maud will never notice that the table is missing!
Category 1 items: I like getting rid of things with the minimum of fuss. The easiest way to do this is to take stuff down the dump (or local recycle centre). You suddenly feel freed and happier and have a bit of space in your house to enjoy.
Category 2 items: I also get a lot of pleasure taking stuff down to a good charity shop - One that appreciates your donation. Do it and it will again make you feel good.
