Palestine is a complex problem that has no easy solution. But the fact is that certain hardliners on both sides of the divide -Israel on one hand and Moslems on the other hand cannot see eye to eye. The Moslems in Palestine, in particular Hamas have vowed to destroy Israel. This on the face of it is a perverse view as the world powers and in particular the United States will not allow the Israeli state to be erased from the map of the Middle East.
It must not be forgotten that the state of Israel was created by a United Nation mandate at the end of the Second World War. Thus the state of Israel must exist and what is required that the Moslems accept this fact. Unfortunately Hamas has stepped up its terrorist activity and has been raining rockets on Israeli establishments. Obviously this will invite retaliation from Israel.
This retaliation has now gone to extremes. On 20 July 2010 Israel warplanes fired missiles on a a palestine settlement killing a senior commander of the Hamas military wing as well as wounding another 11. These attacks were spread over 5 different targets across Gaza. The attacks were supposed to be a response to a rocket attack on the coastal city of Ashkelon earlier by Hamas.
The attacks by the IAF had its effect and resulted in the death of Issa Batran, a militant leader of Hamas. In fact the Israelis were trying to kill him earlier, but Batran had survived these attacks. But the sad part is that in an earlier attack he had lost his wife and five children.
