With self refrigerating compressor
The best way to save money running your refrigerator is to clean the coils and keep them clean. The coils are a set of small tubing usually located on the back, but sometimes on the bottom of the unit. Air flows over the tubing and dust and other debris build up over time. This reduces the efficiency of the refrigerator, which translates into higher energy costs. You can clean the coils with a soft bristle brush, or use your vacuum cleaner.

If you are shopping for a new refrigerator, the top-bottom design uses about 10 percent less energy than the side-by-side arrangement. The payback on a new energy efficient model is less than five years. If you sell your old refrigerator, you are passing the energy waste to the buyer. You might consider a recycling program if you are located near one. Another possibility is selling the old unit to a scrap metal dealer.

The recommended temperature settings are 37-40 degrees F for the refrigerator section, and 5 degrees F for the the freezer. Deep freezers should be set at 0 degrees F. You can buy an inexpensive thermometer to see what the temperature is at various spots in your refrigerator.

Remember that ice buildup in the freezer reduces energy efficiency. Most modern units are self defrosting and prevent ice from accumulating. Try to get rid of old frozen food that you know is bad because of freezer burn, etc. Air must be able to move in the refrigerator compartment for highest efficiency. So, you do not want to pack food containers too tightly. A lot of moisture is released by uncovered foods making the compressor work harder.

It may seem obvious, but keep the door closed as much as possible. When you unload food to take across the kitchen and leave the door wide open, the unit has to cool all that air that gets in. The door also needs to have tight seals. If they leak, you can waste as much as 25 percent of the refrigerator's energy, or more if your home is hot. The type of silicon sealant used on bathtubs and sinks can be used to repair refrigerator seals.

To repair the seal, spray cooking spray over the surface of the frame where the seal repair is going to be. Put some silicon on the damaged seal. Close the door and let the silicon sealant dry. The cooking spray will prevent the silicon from sticking to the door frame and you can clean it off after the sealant completely dries.

Finally, one large refrigerator is more energy efficient than two smaller ones. So, unless you really need that second one out in the garage, it may be more cost effective to consider upgrading to a single energy efficient model.
