11.Plan an agenda for the meeting with your supervisors

Many candidates make the mistake of going for consultation with little or no preparation, waiting for the supervisors to call the shots. Be more proactive and take charge of your progress. You should at least have a simple agenda drawn up so that you will know what to discuss specifically and hence make the session useful for both parties. Your supervisors do not want you to leave the session confused or empty minded. In addition, list down all your areas of concern or uncertainty and discuss them freely with your supervisors. There will of course be conflicting views in certain instances but do bear in mind that you are there not merely to seek answers; rather, you are there to seek new perspectives, a new way of thinking. Your supervisors with their rich experience are often more perceptive than you in that respect. Practice reflective listening by identifying key ideas and taking quick but meaningful notes. If the supervisors allow, you can even try recording the session on cassette or mini-disc.

12.Under promise, over deliver

Use your consultation session or supervisor visit as a milestone for drafts to be examined and discussed. For this to happen, submit your drafts at least a week in advance so that your supervisors will have some time to read through them and provide some quick pointers. It is always beneficial to under promise but over deliver.
This ensures that you do more than required during a particular consultation session.

For instance, you might promise via email two weeks before the consultation that you would work out the major sections of a questionnaire for a subsequent data-collection purpose. Instead of presenting them with the broad sections, work out the entire questionnaire and send it to them a week before the session. This will allow them to help you trim off the rough edges of the questionnaire through their expertise. Likewise for drafts, show them as many drafts as possible so that more comments can be offered during the discussion. Remember, if you have nothing to offer, they will have nothing much to comment as well. Ultimately, it will be a lose-lose situation for you.

13.Follow up with your supervisors after consultation

After meeting up with your supervisors, do not lay off your communication with them for too long. Update them by email with a summary of what was discussed during the consultation session. Spell out some specific short-term goals and set yourself some
deadlines on what you intend to do over the next few weeks or months until you meet again. Also, use this as a channel to clarify any doubts or uncertainties that have been bothering you after the consultation. Sometimes, candidates can get more confused after the consultation as many issues were discussed during the session. This is normal as most candidates meet their supervisors with a sense of anticipation and once that happens, they lose track of some of the key issues discussed. Be inquisitive and not be shy to list down your questions to seek clarification or a different perspective. Remember, establishing a good rapport with your supervisors is essential as your communication purpose is not merely limited to research and nothing else. You can also seek their advice on wider issues regarding your DBA work. Most supervisors act as mentors as well and will be willing to provide you with some advice on how to deal with personal setbacks or other distressing aspects of your life.

14.Approach your research in small units

Do not aim to conduct a very grand research. For instance, try avoiding this kind of mentality: "I want mine to be a multi-disciplinary research - one of its kind!" It usually
will not work well as the focus is too wide and fuzzy to be undertaken within a limited timeframe. Stick to something small, manageable and down to earth. Approach your research in small bites and divide your research scope into stages. For instance, you
might want to concentrate on areas such as literature review, model creation, pilot studies, first-stage fieldwork, second-stage fieldwork, data analysis and so on. Simplify things. Do not be over-ambitious, trying to achieve and handle all things at one go. Good research does not emerge overnight; it is often developed over time. Undertaking postgraduate work calls for consistent effort, not spurts of last-minute preparations. For instance, designing an effective set of questionnaire for your empirical study may need a period of time. It will first go through the drafting stage by framing your questions to address your research objectives and issues. Then you will probably need to test out your questionnaire through a focus group or a pilot study. Subsequently, modifications will be made to refine the questions with advice from your supervisors and pilot sample. This process is necessary to ensure that your research tool such as the questionnaire is relevant and useful.

15.Stay focused

Doing postgraduate research through part-time study is not an easy task. You are likely to be distracted by the daily demands of life, whether personal or professional. At times, you will find it difficult to concentrate on your research when you have many other deadlines to adhere to at work. While it may not be possible to manipulate your workload in the office, you should be able to make minor adjustments to your personal time. Some may call it sacrifice but it seems appropriate to look at it from a time management perspective. Work around the limited time you have yet maintain a balance between work and play. It appears easier said than done. The trick is to stay focused whenever you find time to work on your research. This is often achieved by reminding yourself of your personal values in pursuing this degree. Once you can visualize the long-term benefits of this endeavor, you will be motivated to spend time productively. As a suggestion, try to set aside two hours a day to work on your research. The activities can range from literature search, reading, and writing to talking with someone about your research. All these help you stay focused and keep taps on your own progress. Whenever possible, try to leave the weekends for personal leisure.

16.Aim for a clear and direct writing style

A lot of us misconstrue the notion of writing for academic purposes, thinking that such writing should be highly complex and profound. It is easy to be impressed by highbrow writing by top academics in top-notch journals. However, it must first be noted that not many of us have flair for writing, let alone writing professionally and sophisticatedly like any established researchers. Bear in mind that writing is to communicate your ideas, not to impress or confuse others. Superfluous writing will not communicate your ideas well. Aim for a simple, clear and straightforward writing style. You will be surprised to know that people are likely to be more impressed with your simplicity rather than your complexity in your writing. You will also find that your early drafts tend to be less effectively written than your subsequent drafts. This is because your thinking and writing skills will be sharpened over time. Your supervisors usually do a good job in highlighting the parts that do not communicate well. Avoid sentence structures that are unnecessarily complex and words that are unnecessarily pompous. In addition, do not fall into the trap of writing lengthy sentences in case you lose track of the main subject or main clause. It is also important to use appropriate signal words or connectors such as "firstly", "however" and "on the contrary" to provide the necessary signposting to guide your readers. Remember that your examiners do not want to be bogged down by reading something so heavy and confusing that they cannot find you train of thoughts even after several tries. Lastly, the simpler the sentence structure, the stronger the communicative power.

17.Be aware of the assessment criteria (may not applicable to DPU – DBA Program))

Based on the guidelines provided by the University DBA research papers/projects will be examined as a research portfolio by a panel of external examiners. The examination criteria are as follows:

􀁺 The candidate's understanding of the field of study;
􀁺 The originality of work embodied in the papers/projects;
􀁺 The significance of the papers/projects as a contribution to
practice or theoretical knowledge;
􀁺 The worthiness of the papers/projects for publication in an
appropriate form.

The examiners shall independently assess the research papers/projects and recommend to the University one of the following assessments:
􀁺 PASS;
􀁺 PASS, subject to minor specified amendments or changes being made to the satisfaction of the University (in this case, revised papers/projects should be submitted to the University within three
months of the notification);
􀁺 Result should be deferred pending the candidate passing an oral examination;
􀁺 RE-SUBMIT for re-examination after major revision of at least two of the papers (in this case, resubmission must be done within six months of the notification of the requirement for major revision) or;
􀁺 FAIL.

These guidelines are included in the candidate's handbook given out before or during the commencement of the DBA program. Knowing the examination criteria helps you frame your research scope in a much more focused and meaningful manner. It can be a danger when candidates hand in a piece of work and do not know what the examiners are looking for. If they receive favorable or unfavorable comments from the external examiners, they may not even understand why their work has been complimented or criticized that way.

18.Finally, have a network of friends or other candidates

Doing postgraduate work can be a lonely process especially when other candidates

are frequently preoccupied with their subject areas. Also, if you keep yourself too aloof, you will not know what progress is good progress. Make it a point to interact with your friends or other candidates who are willing to talk to you about your research. This provides a channel for you to air your views, grouses and other sentiments. For all you know, many other candidates also share the same predicaments as you. It is important to share your thoughts with people you trust and seek useful advice on how to deal with your fears or difficulties associated with your studies. Sometimes, a phone call or email will do the job. At other times, try meeting up for a drink or dinner to enjoy some fellowship and build up that sense of camaraderie. This will remind you that you are not alone. With this network established, be generous in sharing your notes, readings and research ideas openly and freely. This is a very useful way of gathering optimum resources in minimum time. Update each other on areas that might be of interest to specific people in your group. For instance, keep the loop informed of certain useful websites, books or journals that you have come across. In turn, you will benefit from others’ contributions as well.

Conclusion

Postgraduate studies may be a long-drawn and exhausting endeavor. To get through the minimum candidature of about three years in one piece with sanity intact, you should think of it as an adventurous journey full of discoveries rather than one that is laden with undulating terrains. The trick is to approach the entire process in a systematic manner, taking one step at a time and making small progress at each step rather than taking a leap and land yourself in quick sand. It can be a painful experience for candidates to change their research topics midway or worse still, three quarters of the way because they realized they had trod on the wrong path due to certain reasons. There is no turning back the clock to begin at the same starting point. Taking the wrong path simply delays your completion time and extension of candidature period means paying more fees. As such, to prevent you from all these situations, you must be vigilant and make a conscious effort to work towards that goal of completion so that fulfillment of all those values laid out at the start of the program is possible. With this fulfillment comes great satisfaction for having walked the path less travelled. One thing for sure, the sense of achievement will stay with you for a long, long time.
All the best in your pursuit of the doctoral degree!
