What makes the Kecak such a fascinating dance to watch are the fifty or so men in the checkered pants. They are both the choir and the props, providing the music for the story in a series of constant vocal chants that change with the mood of the actors. They don't sit still, either, they wave their arms to simulate fire, and reposition themselves around the stage to represent wind and fire, prison cells, and unseen hand of protection from the gods.

The dance is played in five acts and lasts roughly 45 minutes. It taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, who has been kidnapped by the evil King of Lanka, Rahwana and somehow with the help of the white monkey army, Rama rescues his wife and defeats the evil Rahwana.

Attending a Kecak recital is a must for any visitor to Bali. It is a wondrous experience, and a window into the musical and artistic culture that make the Balinese a special people.

They are:

Pura Ulun Danau Batur (north), Pura Pasar Agung (northeast), Pura Lempuyang Luhur (east), Goa Lawah (southeast), Pura Masceti (south), Pura Luhur Batukaru (west), Pura Ulun Danau Bratan (northwest), Besakih (center) and Pura Luhur Uluwatu (southwest).

Bali has other temples such as Pura Tanah Lot and Taman Ayun that are more impressive than some of the kayangan jagat, which goes to show there are other factors than size and appearance, to take into consideration when visiting a temple.

The kecak and fire dances at Pura Uluwatu take place daily at 6-7pm and cost 40,000rp. These can be arranged from almost every hotel in Bali, plus any one of the hundred street-side travel agents. You can also buy tickets the temple.

The temple was founded in the 10th century by Empu Kuturan, a Javanese Hindu priest who built the tiered meru, and a shrine here, as well as at other key locations along the Balinese coast.

In the 17th century, Niratha also from Java came to Bali and built temples, including Pura Rambut Siwi,also adding to Uluwatu.

•Getting to Pura Luhur Uluwatu:

From Kuta from you take the Bypass, and head in the direction of Nusa Dua. Uluwatu is 18kms down the Bypass from Kuta and the turnoff is to the right.

The road Jl. Uluwatu takes you through the local area of Jimbaran, past some big hotels, before heading up the steep hill, and into the heart of the Bukit. Follow Jl. Uluwatu to the very end, where it terminates at a parking area, with Pura Uluwatu another 100 meters further on.

Walking towards the entrance of the temple, you will see the stone archway, with a set of rules and regulations for visitors, including the fact there was and entrance fee. The little office to the left of the entrance accepts the 3,000rp fee and lends you a ceremonial sash and sarong. This now means you are properly dressed. Staff at the office will warn you, the temple monkeys are aggressive. I have seen toursits lose their glasses and hat, as the monkeys will rush to grab any loose items.

The romance of Indonesia's first surf mecca is still there, even after 35 years. Just standing on the cliff-top overlooking the famous lineup is a sight you will remember forever! Especially if a solid 10 foot swell is peeling off for hundreds of metres. Lots of new bungalows have been built along the cliff, making it easier to get a less-crowded "early" or sunset session. Access is still through the famous cave, but these days concrete steps have replaced the rickety old bamboo ladder. Uluwatu may be no secret spot, but it still consistently delivers some of the most incredibly good lefts in Indonesia.
