This beautiful, contemporary courtyard design located on Mercer Island in Washington is a reflection of the site which it calls “home” – the good and the bad of it. The architects at Hutchison & Maul Architecture have taken the property’s advantages and drawbacks, and have made them work in favor of this unique, contemporary design. The Courtyard House sits peacefully on a long, narrow and steep slope, surrounded by forest with a waterfront view. The location characterizes the plan of the home, which is a 6,700-sq.-ft. structure featuring both private and public courtyards carved into the hillside. This concrete, steel, wood and glass home boasts an entrance at the center of the design. Interiors have been designed with modern flair and a charming quality reflective of the natural surroundings. Rich, warm woods from ceiling to floor do nicely to frame these spectacular views. The courtyards and decks with sliding glass doors bring the outdoors in.
