Review: American Dreamz Good satire movies always cause many controversial aspects to its audiences. Like Bulworth and Wag the dog that made quite an impact to US political part. Good parody movies also always cause hysterical moment to its target audiences. Airplane! and Hot Shot are among the best example for successfully accomplished their task. So....What if we try to combine two genre and make it into one single good movie? For this movie, they accomplished half of their job by combining two genre, but they completly failed to the second job by making it suck. You know that it must have a problem when jokes are keep pouring but they couldn't generate a single laugh from you. For this movie, I think it might looked good on the paper because it's such a funny thing to see they're making fun of Bush and American Idol. But the problem is it just a sketch. I mean, all it can possibly be is the sketch for Sathurday Night Live. It cannot stretched into 107 minutes movie whatsoever. In my opinion, I think Paul Weitz might have a second thought on the day he began to shoot this movie. Instead of going all the way to the extreme (whether on parody edge or satire one). He's just glide on icing level, trying to offend anyone as less as possible, trying to avoid controversial subject, trying to avoid laugh. I mean what's the point of making this kind of movie, if he want to avoid all these things. One thing that I admire Paul Weitz is he can ensembles quite an amazing cast into his movie. However, I don't think they did an outstanding job or anything. Hugh Grant as Simon Cowell-like judge of American Dreamz. I think he is the most impressive one in here (if somewhat there's nothing for him to do much in this movie). Mandy Moore plays Sally Kendoo, a girl who can do anything for fame. Chris Kline as moron vet who in love with Mandy. Willem Dafoe as Chaney-like secretary of state. Sam Gozari (who?) as contestant with secret plan and finally, Dennis Quaid as Bush-like president (whom, I think is his worst performance since I've watched). Until now, I think Paul Weitz did an amazing job in About a Boy, In Good Company and American Pie (is it count?). But when this chaos occured to him, I'm not sure that whether he is going to lose his sense of direction or not. I don't know that he will have a gut to risk himself into unfamiliar territory again or not. Let's hope he will do it again and accomplish this time.
