The following appeared in a memorandum written by the assistant manager of a store that sells gourmet food items from various countries
A local wine store made an interesting discovery last month: it sold more French than Italian wine on days when it played recording of French accordion music, but sold more Italian than French wine on days when Italian songs were played. Therefore, I recommend that we put food specialties from one particular country on sale for a week at a time and play only music from that country while the sale is going on. By this means we will increase our profit in the same way that the wine store did, and we will be able to predict more preciously what items we should stock at any given time.
The author of this memo concludes that the wine store should provide only one food specialties of a certain country for each week and plays merely music from that country for that week. To support is argument the writer cites about what the store discovery last month. The observation is that the sale of the each kinds of wine will increase according to what music plays each day. However, the argument relies on several doubtful assumptions, and is unpersuasive as it stands.
Firstly, the argument concludes that revenue of sales will boost up if the restaurant only focus on one kind of wine each day and provide only one type of song in that day. Admittedly, the author points out his observation that on the day playing French music, the sale in French wine is higher. Also, the day playing Italian song, Italian wine revenue increases. Nevertheless, focusing on only one kind of wine each day may not a good reason. It is possible that some loyal customers have been attracted by the taste of French wine rather than Italian wine. Thus, if the store will not provide French wine on some day, they may not enjoy visiting the store anymore. In this case, the overall of sales revenue may decrease.
