We didn’t choose Sondhi Limthongkul. Was that the right decision, given his impact? Well, some of our editorial staff were left wondering why also. But after a thorough debate it was agreed that while he has indisputably created a great phenomenon, his motives remain questionable.

With all due respect to the charismatic media tycoon – whose political talk shows have drawn bigger crowds than the Academy Fantasia concerts, boosted the underground CD industry and inspired Net-based political activism – he has done everything he can to scuttle Thaksin Shinawatra except show us he really means it.

Better late than never, though. Sondhi’s dramatic U-turn against the prime minister undeniably rattled the government and is a major reason why Thaksin’s popularity has plunged to its lowest point yet and the PM has added vulgarity to his usual arrogance. And, as of today, Sondhi remains in a strong position to inflict even greater damage on a man he once described as the greatest leader Thailand has ever had.

Why has the public responded so enthusiastically to Sondhi? Why do people wait anxiously for what he has to say at Lumpini Park week in, week out? There’s a combination of factors. For one thing, he seems to have good and credible information, and is second to none when putting together the jigsaw pieces of political intrigue. Most of all, who between Roy Keane and Steven Gerrard would you like to hear speaking out against Sir Alex Ferguson? There you go. Sondhi is Thailand’s Anwar Ibrahim. People believe he knows a lot, so when he speaks, they listen.

Which brings us to a disturbing point. It’s not about how much he knows, but how long he has kept it all to himself. Sondhi is undoubtedly a very smart man, so it’s a great mystery why the issue of conflicts of interest, “policy corruption” or media manipulation managed to escape him in the earlier years of Thaksin’s reign. The more fierce Sondhi becomes, in Thaksin’s own words, when it comes to “barking” at the prime minister, the question of why he chose to remain silent for so long becomes all the more resounding.

For example, the Cabinet’s plan to use state funds to buy the “Air Force One” jet for its own use was mooted in early 2004, if not before that. The scandalous allocation of PTT Plc shares took place in Thaksin’s first term. And when Sondhi admitted, for the first time, in October that “there has been no scarier time for press freedom”, half a dozen editors had long been fired and the staggering Shin Corp civil suits against the Thai Post and media activist Supinya Klangnarong were already old news.

Where was Sondhi when all of this was going on? The answer lies in the well-known columns of his Manager daily. A year ago, the paper said the planned Egat privatisation was “a process where people will be allowed to become the real owners of Egat and make Egat’s management transparent and accountable”. In 2001, those attacking Thaksin for concealing his assets were “fools, like the Democrats”. But the most ironic of all was probably a column printed in October, 2002. It decried the Democrats’ “evil craft”, while blaming the opposition party for a rumour that Thaksin was trying to run the country in a semi-presidential fashion and was competing with the royal prerogative.

Sondhi left a big mark on 2005. His name is on everybody’s lips – from schoolchildren to privy councillors, to top diplomats.

He deserves credit for his audacity to stand up and trade blows with the most powerful Thai leader in recent history. But the lingering questions about why he has chosen to do it now remain the only reason why he wasn’t selected our “Person of the Year”.
