Chumphon flash-floods leave villagers homeless Chumphon flash-floods leave villagers homeless Published on December 04, 2005 Torrential rain early yesterday caused a third series of flash-floods in Chumphons Thung Tako and Lang Suan districts, leaving many villagers homeless. Chumphon deputy governor Veera Sriwattanatrakul said floodwater damaged 300 houses and left about 1,300 villagers homeless in Thung Tako district. A 200-metre section of the Asia Highway 41 was also under about 40 centimetres of water. Villagers were evacuated to higher ground and given relief bags, fresh water, food and medicine, Veera said, adding that officials would assess the damage soon and seek a long-term solution because this was the third flood in two months. Some 30 houses in Lang Suan district were inundated by a mudslide, which caused initial damage estimated at Bt5 million, while dozens of other houses and Lang Suan Hospital were flooded. About 90 per cent of the hospital, including the storage area for medicine, was flooded. This forced officials to move patients to upper floors, where they would have endure crowded conditions until the situation is resolved, director Dr Yongyos Thammawut said. Dictionary:
