Shock shower takes city traffic by storm Published on December 28, 2005 An unseasonal downpour caused severe traffic congestion across Bangkok yesterday, with an already severe jam on a viaduct bridge exacerbated by a pileup of some 30 vehicles. The rain, which began pouring all around Bangkok yesterday at around 3am, kept up for more than six hours. Several roads, especially in the inner city, were flooded for the morning rush hours, hampering traffic and delaying numerous commuters heading for work. Lat Phrao, Sukhumvit, Asoke-Phetchaburi, Ratchadaphisek, Phya Thai, Victory Monument, Rama V, Rama IV, Phaholyothin and Suthisarn roads were especially jammed. Around 3.20am, some 30 passenger cars and pickups were involved in a pileup on the slippery surface of the Boromratchonnee parallel expressway. No one was injured in the mass collision, but the pileup of cars slowed traffic to a kilometres-long crawl for more than three hours. The Meteorological Department said yesterday that the heavy rains had been caused by westerly winds from the Andaman Sea and by the east monsoon, which was also bringing heavy precipitation to the North, Northeast and South.
