A giant aquarium in the basement of Bangkok’s newest shopping mall looks set to prove a major crowd-puller. Giant spider crabs, blue-ringed octopuses, ragged-tooth sharks, spotted seals and 30,000 exotic fish from around the world have found a new home in the heart of Bangkok at Siam Ocean World, a state-of-the-art aquarium at Siam Paragon.

The sea aquarium, inside the capital’s latest shopping mall, will lift up the curtains for a grand opening and its first show at 2pm tomorrow.

Tucked away in the basement of Siam Paragon, the aquarium is Southeast Asia’s largest and the size of two football pitches.

Siam Ocean World seems destined to become a top attraction with its managers expecting to draw as many as 1.5 million visitors next year.

“We believe that the opening of Siam Ocean World will be a significant boost for the Thai tourism industry. It’s the first time that Thailand has an urban aquarium with a world-class operation,” general manager Geoff Olson said.

“Some creatures, such as the ragged-tooth sharks, have never been exhibited anywhere in Thailand before.”

Siam Ocean World is a subsidiary of the Oceanis Australia Group – the world’s leading aquarium operator, with more than 15 years’ experience.

The aquarium has displays in seven separate zones, from Rocky Shore to Open Ocean, under the concept of real aquatic environments.

The highlights are the Deep Reef and Weird and Wonder zones, where visitors can see marine animals and biological diversity up close, if not personal.

The Deep Reef – displayed in a large, vertical transparent column – is designed to give a glimpse of the deep blue sea, with colourful coral reefs and animals. The coral reefs and plants are artificial.

“For those who don’t do scuba diving, the Deep Reef is the best alternative,” said Phimphan Ahanthrik, who conducted a preview tour through the aquarium. “Without plunging into the ocean, it gives people some idea what it looks like deep under the sea.”

The Weird and Wonder zone, on the other hand features extraordinary aquatic creatures, such as giant spider crabs and funny-looking garden eels, which keep popping in and out of sandy holes as if they are dancing.

“Another highlight is the shark feeding,” Phimphan said. “It’s quite an experience to see the shark approach the scuba divers. Cross your fingers, and hope they don’t mistake the feeders for the food.”

Feeding shows will be held daily at 1.30pm and 5.30pm. Siam Ocean World also plans to introduce shark feeding for visitors who want to make peace with these predators of the sea.

Like many aquariums, Siam Ocean World has a long transparent tunnel, where people can stroll underneath the water.

The aquarium opens its doors tomorrow and will open every day from 9am till 10pm.

The entrance fees (for both local and foreign visitors) are Bt450 for adults and Bt280 for children.

Visitors can get a Thai-language guide via a headset on purchase of a ticket. English and Mandarin versions are coming soon.

Besides the displays of marine creatures, Siam Ocean World has a gift shop selling T-shirts and souvenirs.
