To feel that I'm alright, know where I am, keep on improving, keep on practicing with enough joy to be as competitive as always. I will only be mentally renewed when I get back to competition, when I'll feel like a tennis player again. Win? Of course, otherwise I would just stay home".

TO BE HAPPY AGAIN / Nadal, who assures to listen to his environment, admits that no one said: "Let's stop". And when it happened it was already too late. "It was in Madrid when someone said: 'What are we doing here?' But it was already too late, the damage was already done". And it took a lot of work to get back to a good form. To lower the point of suffering? "No, to be happy again. I have lived with pain all my life. Without aching there is no happiness. What happines gives you when you achieve something is not a title, nor the points, not even the money; what makes you happy is to know and value how much it cost you to reach that goal. There is nothing that compares to that personal satisfaction to know that you used everything you had at reach to achieve that success. I can't say that I suffer. I'm privileged, there are millions of people that suffer a lot more than I do. I live of what I like, tennis". That coexisitence with pain had a limit, and Nadal explains it in a natural way. And one understands it. "I never thought I was Superman. Quite the opposite, I'm very normal. Since I was 5 I'm used to working to reach that limit and know to live with that limit. But my tennis, that is based on a great physical and mental strength, was starting to suffer because of my physical state. When the pain in my knees started to affect me mentally, I decided to stop. It had no sense going on". And it was then when he remembered an old advice from uncle and coach, Toni Nadal: "Rafa, when things go bad, don't let the hole get bigger, because then it's harder to mend, sew it". And he stopped.

And now he comes back to know where he is. To regain the respect of his rivals? "The respect you have for yourself. You don't win matches because the rival respects you more or less". To win tournaments? "There is nothing more absurd than to set yourself immediate goals that are impossible to achive". To get back the number one spot? "When I was number one I didn't wake up happier that I did while being number two. Only the great victories are able to make me feel happy the next day.

But after this break, with so many machines and boredom, will you dose your effort? "I don't feel that I'm such a good player to chose the tournaments. There are two possible ways to crate your career: to dose yourself and never get to where you want; ar dose yourself to aspire the maximum. And to be honest, I always preferred the last one".

COME TO MALLORCA / He burns with desire to see Ronaldo or Ibrahimovic playing ("his arrivel, and Kaka's, are good for Spain's sport and turns our Liga into the best of the world again") and assures that "the attack hurt him deep inside" even though he insists that "there is no safer place, more beautiful, and cozier than Mallorca, and I, who have felt insecure in many placed in the world, can say it with rotundity".

Nadal admits that the pain in his knees not only affected his head, but that it turned tennis into a routine. "There is nothing worse than doing a sport as a routine", states. So he comes back with the same spirit he had before taking the break ("Boy! I have only been two months away, it seems as if I hadn't played for a year!") and above all, having reviewed, even if he doesn't admit it, the book of style drafted by his uncle Toni, who's first commandment is "por ti, que no quede" (I really don't know how to translate this, since I don't even know what Toni supposedly means with that ).

"If you're not ready to make all that overstraining that is needed to win, it's very hard for things to go well, because any sportsman knows that the distance between winning and losing is small". And then, he glues his index finger and thumb together until the smallest expression, barely a millimeter. "And if the rival, the match, demands of you that little bit more and you don't give it, forget it, you won't win".

If things fall as they should, Federer and Murray would meet in the semifinals in the top half of the draw next Saturday, while Nadal and Djokovic would face off in the other semi. But the route will be far from clear for the main seeds…


Federer will find in his path seventh seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or his compatriot Gilles Simon (9) in the quarters. The latter confronts Canadian Frank Dancevic in the first round.


Murray will have to battle either Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin or Gael Monfils in the round of 16 and then No.8 Nikolay Davydenko or Fernando Gonzalez (11) in the quarter-finals.


Djokovic is heading straight towards a quarter-final versus Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick of the US, champion in Montreal in 2003. Spain’s Fernando Verdasco (10) and Marin Cilic of Croatic will also be on hand to spoil the Serb’s plans to repeat his exploits of 2007.

But it’s Rafael Nadal, returning to competition after a two-month break thanks to tendinitis in his knees, who will have the most difficult journey. He’ll take on compatriot David Ferrer, falling in the rankings but still extremely powerful. If he’s successful, Tommy Robredo (15) stands in his way in the quarters with the tricky Juan Martin Del Potro (6) likely his next opponent.

The Rogers Cup draw is out, and these are the players that Rafa will play against during the course of his comeback tournament:

In the first round, Rafa has a ‘bye’, then either Viktor Troicki or compatriot; David Ferrer will be waiting for him in the second.

Looking ahead, he could potentially meet Tommy Robredo in the 3rd round, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, or Robin Soderling in the quarterfinals, and Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco, or Novak Djokovic in the semis.

The defending champion would be happy to know that he is “back doing what he loves doing most in life” and in behalf of all of his fans we wish him the best of luck during this tournament!
