ข่าวจาก MTF ค่ะ
According to Uncle Toni (link in Spanish):
Some roughly translated quotes:
I felt a piercing pain in my knee and then I couldn't take impulse anymore. You can't play top level matches in such conditions.
I'm undergoing some medical tests. I hope to be able to go to Shanghai but I'm not gonna take any crazy chance. If I can't, I'm not going, I'm coming back for DC, and if I can't go to DC either so be it, I'd have to leave it for next year.
We give 100% in each match and the season is long. ATP should give it some thinking, see what's happening at the end of the season. Balls come faster and faster and it's getting harder for our bodies.
Right now we're thinking of not going to Shanghai, we're actually more "out" than "in" as we'd like at least to be ready for DC.
We had to retire here because of the problems dragging on from Madrid, he just couldn't bear it longer. When you've played so many matches and there are yet two important tournaments (DC and Shanghai) ahead it's even more complicated because there is no break.
We have to talk to the Federation's physician and hear his opinion. Right now we think we're pulling out of Shanghai and see if he can be ready for DC. Rafa went out today because he wanted to give it a try. At the end people are paying their tickets, I understand their suspicions.
What kind of clownish TMC is that? Federer in doubt, Nadal almost certainly out, DelPony injured, Fat Dave not going as he hates Chinese food, Blake probably in due to all this, same with Ferrer who can't win a top100 since months...
RAFA TO PLAY SHANGHAI?...DOUBTFUL ( ข่าวจาก RN ค่ะ )
1st of November
Toni Nadal, uncle and coach of Rafa Nadal, has opened up to the media today about his nephew's knee injury that forced him to pull out of the Paris Master Series yesterday. "We are seriously considering not going to the Masters Cup in Shanghai".
At the moment, "it's doubtful', said Toni to Cadena Ser, a Spanish radio station. "We are more out than in. And it would be best for us to prepare properly for the upcoming Davis Cup final in Argentina.
"This week we discussed the possibility of pulling out", then he continued..."When you've been playing so many matches and on top of that you know there are two very important tournaments coming up, Shangai and the Davis Cup final, then it becomes very complicated because you get no rest what so ever".
"We will pay a visit to the Tennis Federation doctor this Monday and we'll wait till then to make up our mind. But right now I think we won't be going to Shanghai".
In spite of Rafa not feeling well for his quarterfinal match against Davydenko, he "still wanted to go out there and at least give it a try". That's always been his attitude towards life.
At the end of the day a lot of people pay to come and see him, but unfortunately, he wasn't feeling well.
At the same time, Rafa's PR, Benito Pérez Barbadillo, gave a short interview to Radio 10, another Spanish radio station, and spoke about Rafa's physical state and how it would affect his performance at the Davis Cup.
"At the moment, all we know is that Rafa has a strong pain in his knee. Nothing more. We don't know if it's an injury yet"... "On Monday we will find out more about it" continued Benito.
"If Rafa had to chose between the Davis Cup and Shanghai, he would chose the Davis Cup".

MANACORÍ THE EXPENSES OF A FEW IS A PHYSICAL EVIDENCE TO TRAVEL TO SHANGHAI
Toni Nadal: "We are proposing not to go to Shanghai"
Toni Nadal, uncle and coach Rafa Nadal, has pointed out that following the injury to her nephew who had forced him to retire in the quarterfinals of the Masters Series in Paris, are considering not to attend the Master's Cup in Shanghai. The Manacor be submitted this weekend to some physical evidence that dictate the extent of his injury.
"At this moment we are proposing not to go to Shanghai," said the coach of world number one to Cadena Ser. "Now we are more outside than inside, because they are interested in at least prepare the Davis Cup. We are proposing not to go there," he said. "We have to talk to the doctor and that the Federation Nos their opinion. Right now I feel that we are not going to Shanghai. Let's see if we can prepare well and reach the Davis Cup well there," he added.
Nadal now abandoned his quarter final against Russian Nikolay Davydenko after cede the first set by 6-1 because of some problems in his right knee and thigh. "Rafael has come out, I did not want to retire without trying," said Toni Nadal on the attitude of his nephew. "In the end the people pay," he continued, "I understand the people who pay an entry, and therefore his suspicion. I had crossed first with Federer and he had commented, I think that Rafael is going to do the same thing as you," Toni Nadal said.
"We have had to withdraw from here by the problems arrastrábamos and Madrid, and has not been able to endure. This last week we had commented even arrived and retreat. When it over so many parties and lacks two important tournaments, Shanghai and the end of Davis Cup is further complicated because there is no rest, "said Toni.
The tests will determine what to do about Shanghai
Rafa had planned to travel to Shanghai next Tuesday. Depending on what you look at the physical evidence to be submitted this weekend, Nadal could well go the same Tuesday-eastern lands, either delaying their travel for rest or anything else not to compete in the Masters Cup, something that was the case in 2005 due to some problems in the ankle.
Nadal's priority at the moment is to recover and be in the best position to face the dispute of the Davis Cup final in Mar del Plata from 21 to 23 of next November.

Nadal coach says Davis Cup trumps Masters Cup
Nov 2, 2008
Paris - Injured Rafael Nadal will skip the year-end Masters Cup starting in a week in Shanghai if playing there will hamper his chance to face off in the Davis Cup final with Argentina.
Nadal's uncle and coach Toni Nadal told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa on Sunday that the hard choice would be made if the knee injury which the number one suffered on Friday at the Paris Masters does not heal in time for a flight to China this week.
'The ideal is to be well to play the Davis Cup,' said Toni Nadal, whose nephew had to quit a Paris quarter-final with tendinitis in his right knee.
Team Nadal is due to fly to Shanghai for the year-end event among the world top eight on Tuesday, but that date is now flexible - or optional.
'If he is not absolutely fit, we will not go,' said Toni. 'To play just 'rather well' does not interest us. You can't win those matches at half-strength.
'Certainly if he does not play Shanghai, he will arrive more rested, physically and mentally, for the Davis Cup final (against Argentina November 21-23 in Mar del Plata).
'If Shanghai were the last match of the season we would go, clearly, but to go to Shanghai and to be unfit for the Davis Cup final does not make sense.'
Nadal knee injury proves ATP season a torture test
11/2/08 Johan Lindahl
A knee injury as a result of a long and grueling ATP campaign may have proved a point for Rafael Nadal - the season is just too long.
Nadal limped out of the Paris Masters, retiring with just a week to go before the start of the year-end Masters Cup in Shanghai.
The Spaniard was taking medical scans and still hoping to board a plane to China within the next few days. No. 2 Roger Federer also quit Paris but was in a less grave situation, with his back pain pullout viewed as mainly a precaution.
Nevertheless, Nadal says that playing nearly all year round is too much, especially for the top guys. "With this calendar it's very difficult to play a lot of years in a row.
"The ATP and everybody have to think about these things what's happening in the end of the season. The speed of the ball is increasing and it's tougher for the body. For the last four years I was fine," he said a day before with dramatic withdrawal after losing a first- set 6-1 against Nikolay Davydenko.
"Roger and I try our best in every tournament. But when you can no more, you can't no more. You know how tough is the season and how long, a lot of the matches on our shoulders."
