Aesop’s Fables: The Cock and the Jewel – นิทานเรื่องสั้น นิทานอีสปภาษาอังกฤษพร้อมคำแปลไทย เรื่องพ่อไก่กับเม็ดพลอย  

A Cock was strutting up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he espied something shining amid the stray. “Ho! Ho! quoth he, that ‘s for me,” and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw.
พ่อไก่ตัวหนึ่งกำลังเดินวางมาดไปมาอยู่ในไร่นา อยู่ท่ามกลางหมู่ไก่ตัวเมีย ทันใดนั้นมันเห็นว่ามีอะไรบางอย่าง วาววับ อยู่ในกองฟาง “โก๊ก, โก๊ก” มันเอ่ยปาก “นั่นมันลาภของข้านี่หว่า” ว่าแล้วมันก็ดึง (จิก) ขึ้นมาจากใต้กองฟาง

What did it turn out to be but a gem stone that by some chance had been lost in the yard? “You may be a treasure” quoth the Cock, “to men that prize you, but for me I would rather have a single rice-corn than a peck of gem stones”
พ่อไก่ได้เม็ดพลอยมานั่นเอง ที่มีใครบังเอิญทำตกไว้ในบริเวณนั้น? “แกอาจเป็นทรัพย์สมบัติอันมีค่า” พ่อไก่พูด “สำหรับมนุษย์ที่ตีราคาให้แก, แต่สำหรับข้าแล้วได้ข้าวเปลือกเพียงเม็ดเดียว ยังจะดีกว่าได้พลอยตั้งกอง”
