****************** Nadal: the secrets of his success (series of interviews with players) GrandChelem Online Magazine, n°11 - welovetennis.fr Gilles Simon about...
......Last but not least, the interview with Gilles Simon closed the triptych on Rafael Nadal is a first-hand testimony by one of the most sophisticated players in the circuit. Krystel Roche is always conducting the interview in Marseille.
Facing Nadal
Q; Are the values in which Nadal has been raised are important?
Yes. I think it is very important, because a player who is very, very respectful of all its opponents. And even if, when he arrived on the circuit, he had the same attitudes that I did not especially (when it really encourages each point), he really has changed, it is much more temperate. Frankly, at the attitude is by far the No. 1.
Q; Trains there more than others? Have the same behavior in training and match?
No. Absolutely not. Having trained with him several times, I can say that in training, he tried a lot of things he cannot do, it is quite regular. It is not that he takes more risks than usual ... he only takes a risk! (smile) he hits very hard, looking for the winning two strikes, to change his game for me, the first time I trained with him, I said "never again I play with him! "(And I'm not the only one) To tell you ... And yet I love it. Because he was there to work on his thing, and attempting to reach the winning point after two strikes ... I saw a game the next day: he made no mistake, played at the baseline, defending, while the stand-in 'training, service-it was stolen, return stolen etc ... So that's why I say no, it is not at all like the training and match! (smile)
Q; What say you out of court just after having suffered?
I think that it is a pleasure of playing against him each time. Because on the level of the attitude it is irreproachable. Because it respects no matter what it arrives its adversary. Because despite everything the tournaments which it gains, and the fact that it is n°1, it is not caught for another. Therefore, really, it is always a pleasure of playing against him.
Q ;Rafa, when there some has more, there some has again?
Physically, sometimes, it is seen that it is tired. That was the case for example in Australian Open. But what is incredible, it is its attention. Its capacity to fix its attention, even when it is hard. It is seen: it moves a little less better, runs a little less quickly, but on the level of the attitude: it does not move. There remains concentrated on each point. Even if that lasts five hours, during five hours, it is concentrated on all the points. And that, it is a thing almost impossible to make. It is the only one which I see doing that.
Q; What could he envy in your game?
Not much, in my opinion! (laughs). If there is only one trick which he must be able envy me, maybe my backhand. anyway, he improved his so much, that today I am not sure that it is worse than mine. Afterwards, he does not have anything to envy me the level of the endurance, of the blow right either, the service either, either stolen, mental either. It is for that it is n°1 besides (to smile)
For me, it's always a pleasure to play against him. Every time. Because he's irreproachable (ไม่มีข้อตำหนิ) when talking about his attitude (behavior). Because no matter what happens, he always respects his opponent. Because despite all the tournaments he has won and the fact that he's number one, he doesn't consider himself to be above the others. So, really, it's always a pleasure to play against him. Physically, you can sometimes see that he's tired. That was the case in the Australian Open for example. But what's incredible is his focus. His ability to keep his focus, even when it's tough. You can see it: he moves a bit less well, he runs a bit slower but his focus stays the same. He stays concentrated on each point. Even when it lasts 5 hours, he will stay focused throughout those 5 hours on each point and this is nearly impossible to do. He's the only one I see capable of this.
I don't know if it matters that you live on an island or not. However, I do think that the education plays an important role because he's a player who is very respectful to all his opponents. And even if he had a couple of habits when he just started out that even I didn't really like (like encouraging himself after each point), he has really changed. He has toned it down. Personally, I think that the key to his success - and it still plays a role today - is that he's been very much underestimated in comparison with the level he had. I think that this awful; they have branded him as this clay court beast who can only run....I think that the fact that he doesn't let such things get to him is his strength but he uses it. Even today, being the number one, he still indicates that Federer is ahead of him even if it seems contradictory after having beaten him I don't know how many times and on every surface.
Rafa and his uncle
Q; You could, like him, Coach and train with a member of your family?
Today: No, because I have no one in my family that can help me on the court. After all, everyone has his own story. From what I see from the outside, it seems obvious to me that Toni was a very important role.
Yes, Toni plays a crucial part in his success. However, having trained with Rafa several times, I can tell you that in practice, he tries out an enormous amount of things that he either can't do or doesn't do often. It's not that he takes more risks than usual but it's a matter of taking nothing but risks! (smiles) He hits really hard and he looks to win the point within two shots to improve his game. The first time I trained with him, I told myself: "NEVER again will I play with him! (and I'm not the only one). That's saying something...and yet, I adore it because he was there to work on his game and to win points within two shots...I watched his match the next day: he made no mistake, played from the back of the court, played defensive and yet, just the day before, in training, he would do serve-volley, return-volley etc... So, all this to say that he's totally different during practice compared with his matches. (smiles)
Nadal in Roger's shadow
Q; What is the importance of his rivalry with Federer in his progression?
I think Nadal has greatly increased because there was Federer in the face. Federer made him aware of his limitations on certain surfaces in the beginning, Rafa and he continued to work. It's a winner baby, necessarily: as long as he remains a player stronger than him, he will always be everything to catch up.
Personally, I think his success factor No. 1 - and it still plays a little today-is that it was someone who was always underestimated compared to the level he had. I found it terrible the way he has been underestimated all the time, the way in which it was underestimated all the time, to be initially categorized as a beaten ground boring who can only run...
And I think, his strength is he was not irritated after that. He has played. Even today, being No. 1 worldwide, claim that it leaves Federer is in front, while it seems absurd to think that Federer is stronger than him after the beating I do not know how many times, and now on all surfaces! And for all that, the fact that it is undervalued compared to Federer just because people continue to find it normal ... yes, Federer is still No. 1, and that he did not bookmark it ... Rafa is so underrated ... (sigh)
It seems absurd to think that a player who has six Grand Slams on three different surfaces at 22 years, knows how to do THAT boring a bump and run. That is to say that ... If it was so much below Federer and his artistic genius, as we hear about - I love Federer, and really it is a artistic genius! - But what I am saying is that I do not think Federer is stronger than Nadal. I watch the matches, and I see that Nadal won 10 times, 15 times against Federer. I just cannot believe that Federer is stronger than Nadal. He was, it no longer. And Nadal has used it to continue to grow.
When we did not expect him on grass, he made his first final Wim ', "And yeah, it's luck, he had a good table foobar etc ...". Second season, one more final Wim ': "Yeah, but good against Federer it does not ...." Except that now, at that time, he lost in five sets. And, finally, he won in 2008. Him that it was cataloged as the player who could win on clay.
Federer, from the start, has struggled on grass. What I find amazing is that some may still believe that Rafa, this is a gross conge and running ... So it is much more than that. For me, both are completely equal. Federer has a better track record, but they do not have the same age either!
Nadal's strength: to stay more than two or three years ... No. 2! With more than 5,000 ranking points! While some have been No. 1 with less points than that in the history of tennis! And stay there, never letting go, never giving up ... Not to mention the frustration you must have to be No. 2 just because you have an alien as Federer plays at the same time as you ... We see that, other players, it discourages them. Djoko, who came very close: it seems that he has declined a bit.
At first, he said, "I will eat the two." And finally, deal with the density as it asked to be in the final, winning all the time, it was felt, especially in his attitude (although, at the level of classification, there is 3 and very close) that it fell a bit ... Nadal, the mental strength! To remain No. 2 in the world for three years, beating Federer tons of time, to hear that Federer is 100 times better than it will never be .... I think it had to be tough, and he ultimately used it to his hole, quiet start to grow on all surfaces. And finally, be No. 1. And undisputed No. 1 today.
He can say what he wants, that Federer is stronger, etc. Today, it is undisputed No. 1, with an incredible advance. I say all this without really denigrate Roger, because that, once again, is a player that I respect enormously, and I thank because I do not know how many people and tennis players live through him. But it is just to emphasize that I find absurd that some comments I heard on Nadal, whereas for me it is under great champions like Federer and point.
I watch the matches and I see Nadal win 10 times, 15 times against Federer. I simply can't think that Federer is stronger than Nadal. He used to be but that's no longer the case. Nadal used that to continue to get stronger. When we didn't expect him on grass, he reached his first Wimbledon final: "Well, it was luck, he had a good draw". Second final in Wimbledon: "yeah, but..well, he will never pull it off against Federer...". Except that even then, he lost in five sets. And finally, he wins. He, who others have branded as the player who can only win on clay.
What I find incredible is that even today, certain people still find reasons to believe that he's only a brute who stomps and runs...It's so much more than that. Nadal's strength is that for 2, 3 years, he continued to be...number two! This with 5000 ranking points! Just think how many have been number one with less points. He never let go... That's not even speaking of the frustration that the only reason why you're stuck at n°2 is that there's this alien Federer who plays at the same time as you. You can see that this has discouraged the other players. Djoko was close but you have the impression that he's taken a step back. At first, he said: "I'm going to devour those two" but then, after seeing how much it took to reach a final, to win all the time, you could sense, especially in his attitude (even if he kept his n°3 ranking), that he took a step back. Nadal, such a force! To stay number 2, to beat Federer a lot of times, to hear that he's 100 times better than you...I think that this must have been tough and he just used it to make his move and to finally reach that number one spot. And he's the indisputable number one nowadays. They can say whatever they want, he's the indisputable number one with a considerable lead!
Being a lefty
Q; Coming back to Nadal, is it so important that he is a lefty? A lot. Because his weapon is his right cross shot that splashes enormously. Already, against all the players who have a single-handed backhand, he has a huge advantage in this series then won a number of points incalculable that. And, obviously, being left-handed help much. Particularly for his service is not incredible, but it is very annoying because it takes an incredible angle. It would have the same service right, it would greatly reduce the bad, we always return. But that is left is difficult. A small slice later benefit when you return and that shifts in law blow it has all the ground, and good ... This is not the same in the other direction.
His weapon is his cross-court forehand that works like an enormous whip. To start with, he has a big advantage against players with a one-handed backhand and this wins him a countless amount of points. Furthermore, the fact that he's a lefty helps him a lot. He doesn't have a heavy serve but it's bothersome because he uses incredible angles. If he'd used the same serve as a right-hander, it wouldn't hurt so much. Now, a bit of slice on the ad court when you return and wham, he shoots his forehand.
