สัมภาษณ์ก่อนชิง ราฟาพูดเก่งขึ้นเยอะ Press conference before the final
Quote: Q. How are you feeling after your session on court just now?
RAFAEL NADAL: Fine. I practiced for two hours. So having day off yesterday, today I felt with energy to practice a little bit more. I felt that I needed to move well the body, to stay with rhythm.
I did, and I am happy, no? Enjoying these two days off.
Q. Did you stay up late last night watching the match the other match?
RAFAEL NADAL: I watched the second set, beginning of the third I went for dinner, and I came back after the 4‑1 in the fourth and I watched the rest of the match.
Q. What did you think of it?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think the second set was fantastic. Was really impressive level from both of them. First set I didn't see, but the fourth seems like Andy was very tired. He wasn't ready to play the fourth, and Nole was much more fresh.
The fifth seems like Andy was very tired, too, because Novak have the control of the situation. But in the 5‑3, Andy break with Love‑40, so after he had fantastic chance. With a 5‑4, 15‑40, he little bit of mistake with the forehand in the return on the deuce on the 15‑40; 30‑40 was an amazing point. Djokovic finished with unbelievable forehand down the line.
Another point for Andy, big mistake to the net for him with his backhand. He didn't miss not one backhand during all the match, and he missed in that moment. It was a tough moment for him.
After when that happens, playing for four hours forty‑five, it's normal you will be in trouble in the next game; Novak plays well and match was done.
It was an emotional match, and I enjoyed watching on TV.
พูดถึงโนล Q. What does it mean for you to face another time Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam final?
RAFAEL NADAL: For me what means is I am in the final of another Grand Slam, fourth in a row. Happy for that. The opponent at the end is the best player of the world today, so that's why I played the last few finals against him.
So will be always a really tough match for me. He is the favorite after being No. 1 in the world and after playing fantastic and beating me the last six times. So just happy to be there.
For me, the tournament is really, really good. Right now I going to try to play my best tennis and fight every ball knowing that is going to be a tough one.
Q. Do you think with the changes you've made to your game in the off‑season, the things you're doing differently, can you surprise him tomorrow with some new things?
RAFAEL NADAL: I am trying to play a little bit more aggressive and hit more winners. You know, the improves that I want to do is not complete.
No, no, I didn't practice a lot with that, so I need time to play with this aggressive plan during all the match.
Probably I need few more months and tournaments. But I am happy how I am doing, no? I don't know if going to be enough for him. I going to try to play well like I did all the tournament.
I need to play a little bit better, in my opinion, to have chances, but I am happy about how I am doing. I think I'm in the right way to compete against the top players of the world. I did here winning against the No 6, against the No. 3.
So it's is fantastic way to start season. Now is another big, big test. I don't know if I am enough ready to win the match of tomorrow, but I believe that I can do it and I going to fight for it.
Q. You remember what it was like of course last year coming in here going for the slam. It was at that stage. It's slightly different now, isn't it? You can understand what the expectation is like on Djokovic tomorrow because you've been there. Is that a tough thing to do?
RAFAEL NADAL: He is not playing for the Grand Slam.
Q. No, no, but he's the No. 1 player in the world and playing for three in a row. It's a tough situation to be in.
RAFAEL NADAL: No is a fantastic situation to be. (Smiling) It's really not a tough one.
No, I played for the three in a row US Open 2010. When you are coming with that confidence everything is a little bit easier, no?
I was a little bit unlucky here last year when I played for the Grand Slam. I didn't feel the extra pressure for that. That's true. I felt that I was ready to compete. I had an injury in the quarterfinals so I was out.
That's it. Go home. Keep practicing. I think for him is an advantage, not a pressure, to be in that situation.
พูดถึง (ดราม่า) โค้ชของโนล Q. Novak's coach said yesterday that it's very difficult to make winners because the balls are very heavy. Do you feel that way?
RAFAEL NADAL: For him is being very difficult. Seems like he cannot do one winner. (Smiling.)
No, he's playing very well, no? He's doing fantastic tournament.
Q. Do you feel with the ball it's difficult to make winners?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. I feel it's difficult to make winners when the weather conditions are cold. When the weather conditions are warm or hot, I think the ball is the right one.
When it's cold, for example, the week before the tournament it was very cold here. The ball was very big, very heavy. I don't believe today it's happen.
Q. Novak has been having some trouble with breathing in the last two matches. Do you think it'll be a factor tomorrow and something you can take advantage of?
RAFAEL NADAL: It's funny, no? I saw the match yesterday on the TV she show on the Channel 7 when he was in the fifth set moving fantastically well, and they show images from two hours fifty before and seems like he was destroyed. Two hours fifty later he was in perfect condition.
So is difficult to imagine that he has these problems. I don't know.
พูดถึง แอนดี้ เมอร์เร่ย์ พูดดีเหลือเกิน รู้สึกคู่นี้รักกันมานานและเสมอต้นเสมอปลาย Q. Andy said last night that he thought he had closed the gap on the top three. Do you feel there has been a little to choose between yourself, Roger, Novak, and Andy now?
RAFAEL NADAL: He never was very far. That's the true. He's playing well. He always played fantastic. He's unlucky not to win a Grand Slam yet.
Yesterday he lost another very good opportunity, in my opinion. Because winning two sets to one, winning the third set, probably losing a lot chances, and then winning with 7‑6 ‑‑ to win a tournament like this and to play against player like Djokovic, you cannot start the fourth set like this.
It's the moment to play with more intensity than ever, not start with 3‑Love down and two breaks in five minutes. That way you lose the match. You want to win the tournament, you cannot start ‑‑ you can lose ‑‑ the other can beat you, but you cannot lose in the beginning.
But he's playing well. He's playing fantastic. He deserve to win a Grand Slam. He was unlucky at the end, but the only negative thing for me in his match is the beginning of the fourth.
When the other have more doubts, is in really trouble, you make for the opponent easier than what should be, no? That's my feeling.
For the rest, he can be No. 1 at the end of the season. I don't have any doubt on that. The level is there. When you are able to play how many, five Grand Slams in a row playing semifinals or final, it's only a mental thing.
The rest of the things are there. He started the season another time playing very well winning a tournament, playing semifinals here, and few points away to win against No. 1 player of the world.
ชอบประโยคสุดท้าย Q. Can you remember a situation that you were in like that when the expectation was to go on and win a Grand Slam and you got very close and how you coped with that situation manage your mind? Because as you say, so much of that sport is what happens in the head.
RAFAEL NADAL: I was lucky in that situation, because I really didn't had that pressure or that feeling to win a Grand Slam.
And the first time that I went to play a Grand Slam with the feeling that I can win Grand Slam, I won. That's the true.
Because we talk about the Roland Garros 2005, that's the really first one. Few months ago I really started to play well, I really started to win, and was in the first Grand Slam that I arrived with real chances to win.
Before, wasn't the chance. I played in Australia and make Round of 16 against Hewitt with chance to be in quarterfinals, but knowing that I don't going to win never, no? But in that moment yes, and I won. So that's a little bit of lucky that I was there.
I did. And after winning one, it's easier win two. After win two, it's easy to win three.

“Federer has been the most admired player over the last 10 years, but Rafael Nadal the most loved” — Commentator on British Eurosport
@Khun Moothong, you were so lucky to get to see all those matches. Like all of us here, I’m still a bit sad and upset that Rafa didn’t win. But he’s getting closer and closer and shows a good sign/ grits /spirit of a true fighter that make us believe that the old Rafa is back.
Look forward to hearing you share your experiences with us.

I need a sparring partner to serve, and let me practice the return... I want to work on court, get tired, and then try to get to balls and return them with force... Im back to being at a high level, but I should make it even higher. Rafael Nadal

No suggestion for the meeting point. I haven't been to Central Grand Rama 9 yet but it seems fine. Or anywhere close to BTS station would be great. I simply hope it'll not be too far from my place. I live in Rajburana area. เป็นคนฝั่งธน ไม่ค่อยชำนาญทางจ้า ถ้าไกลไปเดี๋ยวหลงทาง (^^;)
Btw, will the meeting be on weekdays or weekend?
@Khun Moothong, did you buy RRRRRAFA T-Shirt? If yes, do you mind bringing it with you? Would love to see it.
Either Mar 17 or Mar 18 is fine with me, but it's very likely that I can't go before 1:00 pm. Let's see what the majority say first, then I'll let you know if I can make it or not.
K. Moonthong, is there any way I can have your phone number? If you don't mind, you may leave your email address here. And I'll contact you shortly. Thx.
Khun อ่อน, You've got that right. You can choose one of those 3 set menus.
If all agree that CO2 is the meeting place for us (Mar 18, 5:00 pm onwards or some other time/date if some can't make it), I can buy the vouchers and pay for everyone. Then you can pay me once we meet. But I need to hear from the rest (คุณน้อง/น้องไตเติ้ล/น้องส้ม/คุณหมูทอง/คุณปลาดาว?) before 11:30 am tomorrow. If you have any questions, you can reach me at 089-109-4447.
คุณอ่อน - Do you happen to have their phone numbers, email addresses, twitters, etc? If yes, is it possible for you to call/contact them now? Since, I may be busy tomorrow, the sooner I know, the better.
What is the name of the restaurant/meeting place? And where exactly is it in Soi Aree? I know Phaholyothin Rd but I'm not familiar with Soi Aree/that area. A map would be very much appreciated.
Btw, could you pls let us know aprrox how much it will cost/per head? The reason I ask is ... if I happen to find a place -- that meets all criteria and closer to city centre -- with good food & lower price (so that you don't have to bear most of the expense) by Sun/Mar 11, I'll propose it as another option for consideration.
But if the majority (hopefully including น้องส้ม ป้ามีมี่ คุณปลาดาว, คุณน้อง, etc) prefers Soi Aree, then so be it.
Will it be convenient for all of you if the meeting point is somewhere in Sathorn/Silom area -- in the vicinity of Convent Road or Soi Saladaeng? If yes, I’ll then propose where we can meet, eat and have long light-hearted conversations about tennis and Rafa in particular, including getting to know one another.
The place I’m going to suggest is pretty practical in case คุณน้อง can’t get back (from a friend’s wedding) in time for dinner. He still can join us later in the evening.
One of the reasons why I suggested "Secret Garden" is that we can sit there for a few hours, eating and chatting. I'm not sure how good their food is though. All I know is they're famous for cafe/desserts which are not cheap obviously, neither are the food. But the menu for อาหารจานเดียว looks ok.
If the restaurant is crowded and there are people waiting to get tables, we can walk to Sathorn Garden Condominium which is a few minutes away. There're a few spots/areas both outside and inside the condo where we can hang around as long as we'd like, methinks.
For those taking BTS, you may get off at Chong Nonsi, cross Sathorn Road and walk a few minutes to the restaurant. See the maps for both places at the links below.
If anyone has any other place to suggest, please do so.

@คุณน้อง Let's assume the meeting point is Secret Garden. If you can join us there, it'll be great. If not, we'll still wait for you at the restaurant or Sathorn Garden Condo. I strongly recommend that you have one of our group's contact numbers and we have yours just in case.
PS. Again, I have to communicate in English b/c it’ll take me hours to type Thai message.
Q. On your serve, we saw in the US Open in 2010 that the velocity of your serve went up, and it seems that since that it hasnt been at the same level. Im wondering, is that the conditions of the balls or the conditions in New York?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. It was the conditions of my game. You know, I served very fast during all the US Open because I felt that I had the perfect feeling on the serve. But the week before in Cincinnati my serve didnt work that well. Thats the true, no? Because at that moment I was serving fantastic. I had the feeling that to win the US Open I had to serve faster. Worked well in that tournament, but in general, I dont need to serve that fast.
You know, the problem when I am serving fast, the percentage is going a little bit down. The problem is if I dont serve the perfect serve the ball come back faster, so I need to play a little bit slower game to have the control of the point. And serving that fast I can have more free points, but my mentality and my style of game doesnt go to this way. Thats the thing. When I am serving that fast, I tried in another times, but I feel like I am losing a little bit the control of my whole game.
Thats why I am trying to serve with high percentage, trying to serve, sure, as fast again with the right percentage and trying to start the point the right way to have the control of the point with my forehand or try to hit the first ball in a good position with my forehand.
Thats the reason. Today I can go on court and serve 132 miles with not many problems. The problem is probably is not the right tactic for my game.
The weather doesn't look good at all. It's very likely that the Rafa/Roger match will be postponed to tomorrow. If that's the case, assuming there's no further rain delay and Rafa wins the 2nd semi. How crazy and unfair would it be if he had to play the singles and doubles finals as well - 3 matches in one day?
Let's hope for the best - nature intervention again after the 2nd semi is done or ATP/the organizer being sensible enough to come up with the better schedule. Fingers crossed!
It's nice to have meet you all -- คุณหมูทอง คุณอ่อน คุณน้อง plus one (cutie gf) และน้องเติ้ลหน้าละอ่อน. :P So much fun getting to know a little bit about one another and talking about our beloved Rafa -- หลานชาย ลูกชาย น้องชาย, etc.
For those who didn't go, I hope you can join us next time especially คุณปลาดาว (เจ้าของblog).
Getting up early just to watch the scoreboard and follow Nadalnews twitter - no live streaming or TV coverage yet. : (
Rafa has just defeated Giraldo 6-2, 6-0. It sounded like a very comfortable win and he played well. His friends Marc/Feli also defeated Mayer/Troicki. Vamos Rafa! Vamos Armada! ;)
Yesterday, Rafa paired up with Marcel. They beat 2 giants (Cilic/Kalovic) 6-1, 6-3. Not a bad prep for Olympics.
No matches today/tomorrow - our time. I guess he will play 2 matches early Monday -- his 3rd round singles against Stepanek and possibly the 2nd round doubles with Marcel against TBD.
Nadal says he brought tendinitis in left knee to Miami. Got worse daily. Felt he couldn't compete today. Exam tomorrow. Hopes 100% for clay.
I believe it's a very wise decision to withdraw. His health is much more important than titles/trophies. Wish him a speedy recovery. Hope the knee will be completely healed before Monte Carlo.
(AP) – Rafael Nadal's knee trouble has sidelined him again, and he hopes for a quick recovery to avoid missing any of the upcoming clay-court season.
Nadal said his knee has been getting worse and extensive treatment Thursday failed to help. He said he'll see a doctor soon and is optimistic he'll be out only briefly.
"It looks like it's nothing really different than happened a few times in the past," he said. "Hopefully with a few days off and with the right treatment, I will be in the right conditions to start to practice on the clay. I know what to do to get better quick, and that's what we're going to try."
The six-time French Open champion still plans to begin his clay season April 16 at the Monte Carlo Masters.
Knee problems prevented Nadal from playing at Wimbledon in 2009 — the only major tournament he has missed since 2006. He retired with knee trouble from a quarterfinal match against Murray at the Australian Open in 2010.
"I try my best in every moment, with pain or without pain," he said. "But when I see the situation is done and I cannot, I cannot."
The 10-time Grand Slam champion had hoped to claim his first Key Biscayne title. His withdrawal left the tournament without a singles match for the afternoon session.
"I am very sorry for the fans," Nadal said. "I'm very sorry for the tournament. I'm very sorry for everybody who was ready to watch the match on the television, for television, for everybody.
"I don't have pleasure. I feel very sad to have to go out before a beautiful match for me — semifinals against Andy."
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Sony Ericsson Open prior to his semi-final clash with 2009 Miami champion Andy Murray. The Spaniard cited a left knee injury on Friday in a press conference.
“I waited until today in the morning. I did a lot of treatment yesterday,” said Nadal.
“I started to have problems on the knee before Indian Wells,” Nadal said. “But that problem [was] not limiting me to play at 100 per cent. So I played in Indian Wells with the normal conditions, playing in good shape physically. Here, [it] is different.”
The 10-time major champion will see a doctor before preparing for the European clay-court season. He is optimistic that he will be able to resume training as he prepares to defend his Open Era record seven consecutive crowns at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in April.
“This year, I started well with no problems. Today is bad news, but that's the sport,” said Nadal. “We cannot expect playing as much as we play [to] be perfect every day of our life. Today is my turn. Everybody has problems, and I will be working hard to be back quick on court and to play my best in Monte Carlo.
“This year, I played the final and two semi-finals in very difficult tournaments, so that's the positive thing that stays on my mind. It's true the last day I did not play good tennis, but my knee is not ready to play good tennis. So in general, I am very happy about almost everything. My schedule is going to be the same. Monte Carlo [and] Barcelona [are the] first two tournaments.”
