คำว่า “the Great” ไม่ใช่คำที่ใช้เฉพาะกับกษัตริย์เหมือนคำว่า “มหาราช” เท่านั้นในภาษาไทย หากแต่ยังใช้กับบุคคลธรรมดาที่ยิ่งใหญ่ได้อีกด้วย เพราะฉะนั้น คำว่า “the Great” อาจแปลว่า “มหาราช” หรือ “ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่” ก็ได้ในภาษาไทย กรุณาสังเกตบริบทประกอบด้วย รายพระนามและนามนี้รวบรวมมาจากเวบวิคิพีเดีย ซึงคนรวบรวมอาจได้ข้อมูลมาไม่ครบ หรืออาจมีคตินิยมทางวิชาการบางประการ บางพระนามจึงไม่ปรากฏในที่นี้ก็มี เช่น King Taksin the Great, Thailand
ผู้ปกครองบ้านเมืองที่เป็นที่รับทราบกันอย่างแน่ชัดว่าใช้ “the Great” (มหาราช) ตามท้ายชื่อ คือ ผู้พิชิตที่ทรงพระนามว่า ซีรุซ ที่สอง แห่งเปอร์เซีย (Cyrus II of Persia)
ผู้ปกครองชาวตะวันตกพระองค์แรกที่เป็นที่ทราบกันว่าใช้ “the Great” ตามท้ายพระนามน่าจะเป็น อานทิโอคุซ ที่สาม (223-187 ก่อนคริสต์กาล) ผู้ครอง เซลอยซิด (Seleucid ruler Antiochus III) ซึ่งอยู่ในการควบคุมของบาบิโลน ถึงแม้ว่าน่าจะเป็นอเล็กซานเดอร์ ที่สามแห่งมาเซดอน (336-323 ก่อนคริสต์กาล) ที่ใช้สร้อยพระนามนี้มาก่อนแล้วก็ตาม การอ้างอิงแรกสุด (ในละครสุขนาฏกรรมโดย เพลาทุซ (Plautus) ที่ทึกทักเอาว่าทุกคนทราบว่า อเล็กซานเดอร์ ที่สาม แห่งมาเซดอน ได้รับพระราชสมัญญาว่า “มหาราช” หรือ “the Great”
ผู้บัญชาการทัพและผู้ปกครองยุคต่อมาก็ยังใช้ฉายา “the Great” เป็นเสมือนหนึ่งชื่อของตนด้วย เช่น นายพลพอมเพอิ ชาวโรมัน (Pompey) ส่วนคนอื่นๆ ได้รับฉายานี้เพื่อรำลึกถึงอดีต เช่น ฮานโน แห่งคาร์เถจ และจักรพรรดิ์อโศกมหาราชแห่งอินเดีย เป็นต้น (Carthaginian Hanno and the Indian emperor Ashoka the Great) ทันทีที่ฉายานี้แพร่หลายออกไป ก็ใช้ต่อท้ายนามสกุลเพื่อเฉลิมเกียรติ สำหรับบุคคลที่ไม่มีอาชีพทางการเมืองด้วยเช่นกัน เช่น นักปรัชญา อัลแบร์ท ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ (Albert the Great)
