Combo review: Harry 4, 40 Years old Virgin, Fun with Dick & Jane, SFLV

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire Before I saw this flick, I don't think it can be better than the third one. Ok, I was totally wrong, it's darker (again), better, more mature and finally it's PG-13! I'm not going to explain the whole story in here like some other review. Instead I will talk about the thing that impressed me (and sometime not). The most impressive thing that I saw is in the middle of the story, when Hogwart school turned into ordinary high-school. I feel like I'm watching John Hughes movies all over agian (80's rules!). Harry love her (asain girl but have a creepy scottish accent) but her love another, Ron love her(you know who) but too wimp to ask. And finally Harry and Ron are all alone in Promnight-like ceremony. I mean, I really like those kind of thing that Mike Newell put it in his own Potter's movie.
Another thing that astonished me is they put weired creaters, gadgets and other mumbo jumbo magic behind the main story. As you can see from the first two flick, they have spend too much time to explain and show all the trick too often, which it is a major distraction for me to catch up with a story (the third one is ok). This one they don't assign work to CG guys too much, instead they only use their marvelous CG whenever the main charactor must confront with. Story progressed, moviegoers delighted.
It's been like half of decade since we knew 3 wizard who came to school together, be friended and in loved. We watch they grow and develop to teenage. For me, it feel like they are really grew up with you. I feel connected to them. Like American Pie trilogy, the first two movies are just like normal teen sex comedy. But when the third one came and ended, I feel like they are my friend who spend quite sometime together through silver screen. This movie has made me feel that way all over again...
PS. If I must have something to complain, I can't help thinking about Emily Watson acts as Hermi. I have a feeling that she seem a bit over the top? But hell, she's adorable as usual!

40 Years old Virgin Steve Carell is very talented man, I admit that this guy can crack me up in Bruce Almighty and Anchorman. Both of them cast him as scene stealer (an effective one for sure). But in this movie he is a lead, he's a title character who didn't seem to get laid for about 40 years. Sound interesting huh? For me, after I saw it, it's doesn't seem to crack me up as it should be.
Anyway,I still kudoes for Steve who keep me care for title character. In the mean tme, his friend are all boring and predicable. Sub-plot are often come and gone unexplained many time. Kathaleen Keener is so wasted (I wish I could see her more in it!). And finally ending credit which is parody a famous play about hippy is seemed out of place and unsatisfied.
Although I have complain so many points in this movie. Somebody might say "Who give a damn, we come to laugh that funny guy Steve Carell!" Still, I feel that this year we have surprisingly fun Wedding Crasher which I enjoy very very much. So when it's come to this movie, it's feel a little bit inferior. That's what I thought.

Fun With Dick & Jane This is another utterly pointless remake of already pointless (as I heard) 1970's movie that came out last year (along with parade of tired sequel and unnecessary remade).
The story in first half an hour is actually quite good concerning with Dick lose his job and he try to figure out what to do. I chuckle at some scene concerning with he and his wife trying to live in poverty life. However, when he and Jane pull the first crime successfully, the story goes downhill (very high one) from there.
The point that disturbed me most is how come the main character didn't get any punishment for all the crime they've done. Instead, they introduce so called “bad guy” and turn Dick & Jane characters into some kind of hero (which is to rob from him), you must be joking!? I mean, is it legal to rob from rich people (and other innocent people from the beginning)? Sadly we're not Robin Hood and lived in medieval anymore.
Jim Carry should pull this character off just like he did in his many previous films. But sadly, this one isn't one of them. I mean he tries his usual over the top performance here, but all I can see is his ludicrous & unfunny over the top act from him (such as in elevator, grass stealer, weird voice scenes). And for Tea Leoni, Alex Baldwin and Richard Jenkins, I think they must be happy with the paycheck that they’ve got from wasted role like this.
Although I think it is not that bad if we just consider to entertainment value. But if we are going talk about movie moral and consider to involvement of stars, then I think it's very disappointing and I wouldn't going to recommend to anyone.

Sympathy For Lady Vengeance This is story of one woman who was convicted for the crime she didn't do. She was jailed for 13 years. Finally she come out which only one determination and that is the revenge a man who did this to her.
Instead of adding complexity into the plot like his 2nd episode of revenge flick "Old Boy", Pak add striking visual and innovation style to the movie. Every shot we usually hear classical music along, which made it look like we watch classical music (with some disturbing images) in the hall.
As I said earlier, this movie is all about style. We will see each of layer of story revealed it to us. I admit that nobody can make this kind of movie like Pak. He turns an ordinary tale into epic of revenge and redemption. Meanwhile, two third of the story he show us how horrible this man is and how suffer she got from him, but the 3rd act Pak turn our emotion again and show us that Justice doesn't always require right or wrong.
My personal thought of this film cannot reveal in this review (It would spoil all the fun you will have in watching this movie). But all I can say is when all things ended. Nobody is right.
You could have brain tumor by watching this contaminated turd. Nothing in Gentlemen Broncos pays off, it’s incoherent mess, and chock-full of incredibly annoying characters. You will not only loath this movie, but it also makes you want to punch someone who responsible for this abomination in the face.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
Imagine if Akira got Live-Action treatment by... say Alfonso Cuarón, you know how awesome it might be? That’s what happened to "Fantastic Mr. Fox". Wes Anderson's auteur perfectly captured the quirkiness and blissful tone of the material. Its stop-motion technique might be a little crude and... somewhat unsophisticated, but that's the charm of it. You’ll feel like pop-up book unveiled before your eyes. This is an exceptional animation of the year.
Up in the Air is a blockbuster movie for people who think blockbuster movies are dumb, as it chock full of brilliantly written dialogue, and acting showcase for three talented actors (especially star-making turn by Anna Kendrick). But in the end, there's little to love, not so much story to chew on (plus disappointing third act), and no real connection to the meaning of human interaction as it intended to be.

I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)
Cliché-ridden plot about a bunch of annoying characters get together in one idiotic circumstance, "I Love You, Beth Cooper" is shameless exploitation & biggest insult to 80s teen flicks. It's like memorizing magic trick from internet, hoping to perform like David Copperfield. Neither sense of wonder nor magic flare happens here. Only good thing is, it makes me wanna cleanse my soul with genuine 80s teen movie night marathon.

Adam (2009)
A perfect companion to Mary & Max (one of the best animation of 2009), Adam is star-crossed love story (pun intended) between Adam, Asperger's Syndrome bearer, and Beth, free spirit woman. The picture wouldn’t be this intimate without stunning performance by Hugh Dancy. On the other hand, the lack of depth on why Beth would love someone like Adam, preventing me from wholeheartedly embraces her choice in the end (which is nice & perfect but requires a leap of faith). Otherwise, this is touching romantic film, which putting its feet firmly on the ground, making the world full of hope and seems nicer place to live.

The Invention of Lying (2009)
Expected to be like “Click” or “Yes Man”, where high-concept plot turned into endless gags, with moral lesson (forcefully) shoving down your throat. But "The Invention of Lying" is thinking man’s film. The whole concept is not seeing how first lying man exploits the ability. But it's about him finding the way not to lie, in order to find genuine happiness. Great stuff.

This is one damn frustrating experience. It’s like watching an infant trying to stand up and walk. They would take a few steps then fall their asses. In fact, kiddie film like “Bugsy Malone” has done better job paying a tribute to film noir than this borefest.

ถ้าอังกฤษมีหนังซอมบี้ฮาแตกอย่าง Shaun of the Dead แล้ว ทำไมอเมริกาจะมีบ้างไม่ได้... Zombieland คือการผสมผสานระหว่างบรรดาหนังซอมบี้เก่าๆ เข้ากับทัศนคติของคนสร้างที่อาจดูหนังแนวนี้มากเกินความจำเป็น จนสามารถสร้างหนังซอมบี้ที่เข้าใจสิ่งที่ตัวเองเป็น และเล่นสนุกไปกับกฏพื้นฐานของซอมบี้ได้อย่างเต็มที่ ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้นต้องยกความดีให้สี่นักแสดงนำ โดยเฉพาะ วู้ดดี้ ฮาเรลสัน (เขาเกิดมาเพื่อบทนี้) ที่ช่วยกันสร้างมนต์เสน่ห์ ให้กับการเดินทางในโลกไร้มนุษย์ได้อย่างเต็มที่
หนังมีไอเดียกิ๊บเก๋ ทำออกมาได้สนุกสนานสไตล์ซิตคอมอังกฤษ โดยเฉพาะการนำกฏเหล็กต่างๆจากหนังที่เกี่ยวกับการท่องเวลา (ดูเหมือนว่า Back to the Future จะเป็นแรงบรรดาลใจหลัก) มาปู้ยี้ปู้ยำอย่างเมามัน ถึงแม้ว่าตลอดเวลาการรับชมจะให้ความรู้สึก เหมือนตัวเองกำลังดูซีรี่ย์ทางโทรทัศน์ แต่มันก็คือตอนที่ฮาที่สุดของซีซั่น แถมเอฟเฟ็คที่ใช้ก็มีคุณภาพจนคาดไม่ถึง

Looking for Eric (2009)
มีความรู้สึกว่าหนังเรื่องนี้มองโลกในแง่ดีเกินบรรยากาศโดยรวม จริงอยู่ว่าทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างที่ลงเอยด้วยดีในตอนสุดท้ายนั้น สามารถสร้างความสุขและรอยยิ้มให้กับคนดู แต่จากสถานการณ์ในเรื่องและบริบทที่เกิดขึ้นก่อนหน้านี้ มันยากที่จะทำใจเชื่อในสิ่งที่เห็น โดยเฉพาะพล็อตรองเกี่ยวกับปืน ซึ่งถ้าถูกตัดออกไปและหนังยังดำเนินเรื่องอย่างที่เป็นอยู่ Looking for Eric ก็น่าจะเป็นหนังฟีลกู้ดที่อบอุ่นที่สุดเรื่องหนึ่งของปีเลยทีเดียว
