What is so special about this work? Why does it continue to cast its spell on today’s Chinese readers? One has to try to imagine a book that combines the qualities of Jane Austen – brilliantly observed accounts of Chinese psychology and personality, meticulous depiction of an aristocratic Chinese/Manchu household – with the grand sweep of a novel such as Vanity Fair or the works of Balzac. Its mood is allegorical, lyrical and philosophical. It leaves the reader with a visionary experience of the human condition, comparable to that of Proust. It’s a blend of Zen Buddhism and Taoism with the underlying theme of “seeing through the Red Dust” beyond the illusion of earthly “reality”.

ได้อ่านบทความชิ้นนี้ของจูเลียน บาร์นส์ ใน Guardian ซึ่งเขากล่าวถึงประสบการณ์ในการอ่านตั้งแต่วัยเด็ก ความผูกพันกับหนังสือ ความรักในการอ่าน การสะสมหนังสือ ...

ไม่กี่เดือนก่อนได้มีโอกาสไปเดินแถววังบูรพา หลังจากไม่ได้เดินแถวนั้นมานานมาก เรียกว่าตั้งแต่จบมัธยมเลยทีเดียว แต่ก่อนแถวนั้นจะมีร้านหนังสือมากมายหลายร้าน ตั้งอยู่ติดๆกัน แต่ตอนนี้หายไปเกือบหมด กลายเป็นสถานที่ซึ่งผมไม่คุ้นเคยไปแล้ว..

วาบความทรงจำได้ผุดพรายขึ้นมา ในตอนเด็ก สมัยมัธยมต้น ต้องไปเรียนเสริมทุกวันเสาร์เช้าที่โรงเรียน พอเรียนเสร็จ ทานข้าวเที่ยง ก็จะเดินออกจากโรงเรียน เลาะถนนตรีเพชร เลี้ยวเข้าวังบูรพา (เดินครู่เดียวถึง) เพื่อไปเดินเล่นตามร้านหนังสือ จุดมุ่งหมายไม่ใช่หาหนังสือเรียน แต่หาหนังสืออ่านเล่น ซึ่งช่วงชีวิตตอนมัธยมต้นมีความสุขมาก เพราะยังไม่ต้องอ่านหนังสืออย่างเคร่งเครียดเพื่อเตรียมสอบเข้ามหาวิทยาลัยอย่างสมัยมัธยมปลาย ตอนนั้นได้อ่านทั้งนิยายจีน ไทย ฝรั่ง ประวัติศาสตร์ ชีวประวัติ ฯลฯ ชอบเดินตามร้านหนังสือ หยิบเล่มนู้นเล่มนี้มาอ่าน ไปเดินเล่นแทบทุกเสาร์บ่ายตลอดสามปี ความสุขสำราญจากร้านหนังสือเกิดขึ้นเวลาที่ได้เจอหนังสือที่เราสนใจโดยบังเอิญ ..

โชคดีอย่างหนึ่งคือที่บ้านมีตู้หนังสือซึ่งมีหนังสือให้เลือกอ่านมาก มีเพชรพระอุมาครบชุด ซึ่งได้อ่านตอนปิดเทอมอย่างสำราญใจ มีสามเกลอ พล นิกร กิมหงวน ซึ่งทำให้ได้เรียนรู้บ้านเมืองไทยในยุคสมัยนั้น มีงานชิ้นเอกของกิมย้งและโกวเล้งซึ่งเพลิดเพลินจนวางไม่ลง มีชุดนิยายนักสืบของอกาธา คริสตี้ มีหนังสือประวัติศาสตร์และชีวประวัติต่างๆมากมาย

ปัจจุบันสังคมได้หมุนเวียนเปลี่ยนไป ร้านหนังสือที่เคยรู้จักนับวันค่อยๆทยอยล้มหายไป ความนิยมในการอ่าน e-books เข้ามาแทนที่ หลายคนถึงกับทำนายว่าอีกไม่กี่สิบปีข้างหน้า หนังสือจะกลายเป็นอดีต ยุคสมัยห้าร้อยปีนับแต่กูเตนเบิร์กอาจถึงจุดสิ้นสุด..

How Germany Keeps Amazon at Bay and Literary Culture Alive

With a population of 82 million, Germany is a knowledge-based, economically successful society with around 2,000 publishing companies and more than 3,500 serious independent bookstores staffed by licensed booksellers (most of whom have completed an apprenticeship of up to three years, including vocational training in cultural history and economics). In Berlin, a city of 3.4 million people, close to 300 bookstores provide outlets for more than 400 publishers. The typical neighborhood bookstore in Germany has two employees, possibly three, and some of them know their bookselling history: there must be at least ten shops in the country named Shakespeare and Company, in tribute to the legendary bookstore established in Paris in 1919 by Sylvia Beach, the original publisher of Ulysses.
