Hypochlorite, generally known as Chloride of lime, clorox, is a major source of Chlorine. It has been used as bleaching agent and disinfectant, commonly used for cleansing and disinfection equipment, toilets and washing facilities. Nowadays some food producers have used this compound to bleach color and inhibit the growth of bacteria for preservation of foods. Consumption of hypochlorite contaminated food is health hazard. Health Impact

• Exposure or Inhalation of hypochlorite causes irritation such as eyes, skin, nose and respiratory tract system and may produce pulmonary edema, dyspnea.
• Consuming hypochlorite contaminated food causes internal irritation and damage, abdominal pain and vomiting.

• Fresh sea foods such as squid, fish, etc.
• Preserved food such as preserved bamboo shoot, pickled vegetables/ fruits, etc.

Test Kit Tool

• 1 Small plastic bottle of test solid
• 1 Large glass bottle of test solution
• 1 Plastic dropper of test solution
• 1 Plastic cup
• 1 Long plastic dropper
• 1 Plastic spoon
• 1 Sheet of test kit handbook

Procedure

1. Pour 5 ml of liquid sample into plastic cup (for dried sample : add clean water and mix together, then use 5 ml of liquid)

2. Add small amount of test solid (small plastic bottle) by plastic spoon, shake to dissolve completely.

3. Add 1 ml. (level 2) of test solution (large glass bottle) by long plastic dropper, mix together.

4. Add 2 drops of test solution (plastic dropper) mix together and observe the color.

Evaluation

• If mixed liquid is blue, such sample contains hypochlorite.
• If mixed liquid has no blue color, such sample contains no hypochlorite.

Precaution

• Test solution in large glass bottle is diluted acid solution which causes skin irritation. In case of contact, wash with water and soap.
• Keep test kit out of children reach.

Keep at room temperature / 6 months.
