Consumption of sodium hydrosulfite contaminated food is health hazard. At present, Sodium hydrosulfite is not permitted for use in foods by FDA, Thailand, except other sulfite group (bleaching agents), for example, sulfur dioxide, sodium and potassium bisulfite and metabisulfite in accordance with The Public Health Notification No. 281 (B.E.2547) regarding food additives. In fact, sodium hydrosulfite is found in many kinds of foods. The rapid screening on sodium hydrosulfite should be applied to control the use of this compound.
Health Impact
Cause dyspnea, lower blood pressure, dizziness. Abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea For severe allergic person or asthmatic patient may cause shock, coma, and death.

Fresh, Preserved vegetables/fruits such as bean sprout, shredded ginger, preserved bamboo shoot, dried fruits, etc. Pickled vegetables/ fruits such as cucumber, onion, lettuce, mustard, sauerkraut, olives, etc.

Procedure 1. In case of liquid sample or liquid and solid component mixtures : Pour liquid sample into plastic bottle of test solution (1/2 volume), shake and notice the color.
2. In case of solid sample : Add clean water and shake together for 1-2 minute, pour liquid sample into plastic bottle of test solution (1/2 volume), shake and notice the color.
Evaluation If mixed liquid is gray or black, such sample contains sodium hydrosulfite (prohibited). If mixed liquid is light blue or green, such sample contains no sodium hydrosulfite.
