Consumption of borax-contaminated food is health hazard.
According to the Ministry of Public Health’s Act No. 151(B.E.2536), borax is prohibited in food. In fact, borax is still found in many kinds of food. Therefore, the Department of Medical Sciences has developed this kit for consumers to test borax in food, with fast and reliable result.

Health Impact

• Toxic to kidney
• Irritation in gastrointestinal tract
• 15 grams of borax for adults or 5 grams for children can cause hematemesis (blood vomiting) and death.

Target Sample

Meat and meat products (Chopped pork, minced fish, fish cake, meatball, fresh pork, sausage, etc.), preserved fruits, and local Thai desserts.

Test Kit Tool

A. Details of Kit
• 1 Plastic spoon
• 1 Pack of curcumin paper (2 sheets)
• 1 Bottle of borax test reagent
• 1 Sheet of test kit handbook

B. Other tools
• 1 Plastic chopper
• 1 Knife
• 1 Porcelain plate or one piece of glass

Procedure

1. Chop sample to small pieces (match head size)

2. Put 4 spoon of sample into bottle of borax test reagent.

3. Use spoon to stir the sample.

4. Wet half of the curcumin paper

5. Place the curcumin paper on porcelain plate or a piece of glass and leave in sunlight for 10 minutes.

Evaluation

If the curcumin paper turns red, such sample contains borax.

Precaution
• If the reagent contacts skin, wash with water and soap.
• Keep testing kit out of children reach.

Keeping / Age
• Keep at room temperature / 2 years.
• Keep pack of curcumin paper sealed and out of light.
