up วิชาความรู้ให้เพื่อนๆ ก่อนละกันเนาะๆๆๆๆๆ แต่วันนี้คงทำได้เพียงแปะ

Title:"Influence of Globalisation on Cultural Diversity in Thailand"

Globalisation has been introduced into

every corner of the world and has spread widely over the last few

decades of twentieth century when ‘the sheer scale and scope of

global interconnectedness has become increasingly evident from

the economic to the cultural sphere’ (McGrew 2005, p.20). Being

first coined in 1980s’ (BBC News 2000), the term ‘globalisation’ is

defined by McGrew and his colleagues as ‘the process by which…

activities in one part of the world come to have significant

consequences for individuals and communities in quite distant

parts of the globe’ (Boyer & Drache 1996, p.64). It is apparent that

the original factors triggering this phenomenon are international

trade and migration. For long periods of human history, free

trading between countries was developed and expanded from local

to regional, now universal, communities with no boundaries. Along

with these activities came a rise in both emigration and

immigration, which were first adopted when Africans laborers

immigrated to the United States. Consequently, those social

relations and movements have brought about cultural diversity in

shared communities where foreign cultures have an influence on

local cultures.

This essay evaluates the cross-cultural impacts of globalisation by

firstly exploring fundamental factors which drive global dynamic

changes from a cultural perspective in Thailand. Then the focus

moves onto negativity and positivity of western cultural absorption

in the Siamese regime. Finally, it draws a conclusion on

globalisation in terms of both benefits and losses in Thai culture,

and makes a suggestion on how to cope with its influence in

cultural aspect in the future. It can be argued that the threat of

westernized dominant cultures can lead to the destruction of a

sense of identity in Thai society.

While advancing infrastructure and providing the citizen higher

living standards, Thailand has been dominated by western,

especially American culture (Inglis 2005, p.111) as a result of

globalisation which has arisen from two major factors. First,

technology introduces global innovation and shrinks the world

where people can connect with one another via the Internet and

telecommunication. The other factor is tourism which creates

a ‘transnational spread of ideas, cultures, and information’

(McGrew 2005, p.21), causing cultural absorption among the

community. In a sense, this vast change is an opportunity for Thais

to learn how to react to modernizing forces. (Featherstone 1993,

p.170) Nevertheless, considerable negative impacts from western

cultural imperialism run parallel in Thai society.

In the first place, Thai language has been threatened by foreign

languages. For hundreds of years, Thailand has demonstrated its

uniqueness in Thai language, as an ‘ethnic marker’. (Kong 1999,

p.226) Yet, affected by English language, the use of Thai language,

especially grammar and pronunciation, has been distorted. Over

and over, more Thais practice English on a regular basis and

replace Thai with English words and structures, both written and

spoken. Even worse, some pronounce Thai characters in a word in

English style, such as /ch/ and /sh/ sounds. Hence, a Thai

language crisis occurs as people neglect proper conventional Thai

usage and do not realize that their language is, as Tomlinson

(2002, p. 269) cited, ‘nations’ treasure which is fragile, can be lost,

and needs protecting and preserving’.

The second shift in Thai culture is evident in ‘the transformation of

local into increasingly international food cultures’ (Tomlinson 2002,

p. 273) displayed in American and European fast-food chain,

associated with ‘McDonaldization’ and ‘Coca-colonization. (Robins

1997, p. 242) At these franchised shops including McDonald’s, KFC,

Burger King, and Pizza hut, Thais are threatened by obesity and

cancer. Rather than shopping at local markets and dining at home,

more Thais lose money on imported food at the supermarket and

on western-style meals at luxurious restaurants. Above all, the

power of western gourmet food has taken over a Thai cuisine and

people today seem to forsake their traditional recipes passed down

from ancient to younger generations, losing their authentic

consumer culture.

The final negative impact of globalisation is portrayed in the

Americanisation of Thai value systems, including ideas, attitudes,

and lifestyles. (Inglis 2005, p.118) People try to imitate American

popular costumes and expressions in everyday life by dressing in

fashionable Western styles and having more self-confidence but

sometimes being aggressive which is against the Thai traditional

norm. From those trends, materialism has occupied Thai

communities where numerous clothes, accessories, and cosmetics

of Western brand names (Wilson 2004, p.46) and luxuries are

merchandised among people of all levels. Besides, an emergence

of shopping malls or complexed explicitly shows a totally different

value on power of money in Thai life. Consequently, these

paradigms of cultural fusion stimulate more criticism of globalised

Thailand, and as Clardy (2005, p. 82) asserts, it destroys ‘ethnicity’

relating to unique locality and a sense of the true self of individuals

and groups.

Despite the unpredictable deleterious nature of globalisation as

mentioned above, its beneficial effects on Thailand in cultural

context can be considered. One of the most significant advantages

contributing a vast change in Thai society is communication with

the outside world through ‘a global network of social and

technological linkages’. (Eade J. 1997, p. 24) Not only can Thais

keep in touch with other individuals in the realm of interconnection,

but they also have more knowledge and perception of the world

through all kinds of media like radio, television, newspapers,

telephone, and the Internet. It is remarkable that modern

technology has exercised its positive power of exposing Thais to

what is going on around the world, and has taken precedence over

Thais’ consumption needs now that it becomes an indispensable

element of modernisation. For instance, computers, electronic

equipment, transportation, and other innovation have facilitated

Thais to produce wide variety of activities in many fields, ranging

from education to business, medicine, social relations, and other

industries. As a result, it is inevitable that technology has had a

great influence upon an ultimate formation of Thai modern city

where a lot of convenience is provided; people can enjoy comfort

and appreciate their quality of life with higher standards. Some

other advantages globalisation have brought to Thailand could be

as follows:

• Learning a foreign language, especially English, as a pathway to

display the nation’s potential to negotiate and compete with other

nations on the world stage.

• Experiencing a variety of world food and having an equal

opportunity of importing and exporting local products to the global

market.

From the aforementioned evidence of alteration of Thai everyday

life, it can be concluded that globalisation embodies negative and

positive traits, yielding numerous impacts upon Thai society in

cultural aspect. Nevertheless, it seems that disadvantages far

outweigh advantages because authentically Thai culture tends to

be at risk of being overwhelmed and destroyed by Western

cultures. A sense of national identity and ethnicity of individuals

and groups could be lost unless Thai people are careful about the

retention of their own unique culture and there are great

deliberations on wide application of globalisation to modernising

the country.

เรื่องการเตรียมตัวเหรอ แน่นอนเลยว่าก่อนอื่นคุณต้นต้องไปสอบ IELTS วัดระดับความสามารถทางภาษาอังกฤษของเราก่อนค่ะว่าอยู่ระดับไหน แล้วก็ศึกษารายละเอียด qualifications conditions ต่างๆ ของ course ที่จะไปเรียนของมหาวิทยาลัยในดวงใจของเราไปพร้อมๆ กันด้วยว่าเค้าต้องการคุณสมบัติอย่างไรบ้าง แล้วสภาพความเป็นอยู่ ค่าใช้จ่าย ค่าเล่าเรียน บรรยากาศสภาพแวดล้อมที่รัฐนั้นๆ เป็นอย่างไร list เอาไว้ในใจเยอะๆ นะคะ แล้วเปรียบเทียบข้อดีข้อเสียก่อนจะเลือก Uni นั้นๆ เมื่อได้ผลสอบ IELTS แล้วปรากฎว่าผ่านเกณฑ์ขั้นต่ำที่เค้ากำหนดไว้ (6.0 - 6.5) ก็เตรียมตัวเลือก uni แล้วก็ยื่นใบสมัครขอ offer จากทางมหาลัยค่ะ เมื่อได้ offer แล้ว ก็ค่อยมายื่นขอทุน เตรียมตัวออกเดินทางต่อไป++
