KOREA ARCHERY Academy : Grip

Academy

Located in the center area of the riser is the grip

In addition, the method we hold the riser is also called the grip

A stable grip plays an important role in creating consistent pressures in the bow arm and shoulder

Class Point

1.     Grip Shape

2.     Pressure point location and direction

3.     Grip Strength

In this lecture, we will be covering basic grip shape

changes in grip pressure based on grip positioning

and the method to remove unnecessary tension in the grip

Chapter.1: Grip Shape

Point:

1.     Practice to make grip shape

2.     Empty-handed grip practice > Bow-utilizing grip practice

In order to develop muscle memory of the grip shape

An archer should first practice without the bow

After straightening your bow arm and pointing your fingers to the sky

You should imagine pushing against a wall

Next, create a fist then relax that fist around halfway

In that state, you should imagine directing your index and thumb towards the target

while the other three fingers maintain their curled state

When doing this

It is important to not have unnecessary tension in your hand

Other than what is required to maintain the grip shape

Next, we will be using the bow and applying the grip shape practiced beforehand

While using the grip shape created before, hold the bow maintaining that shape

Then, align the pivot point of the bow with the pivot point of the hand

Next, align the hand's pivot and pressure point with the center line of the bow grip

and hold the bow in a relaxed way

If an archer tries to wrap the fingers around the grip too much

The wrist rotates outwards causing the pressure to fall heavily on the thumb

Be cautious this does not happen

Chapter.2: Pressure Point Location and Direction

Point:

1.     The relationship between the pivot and pressure point

2.     Precise center line and maintaining stable grip height

Because the comfort and hand size for the bow grip is different for each person

The shape and position of the grip will inevitably vary slightly

The goal is to adjust the grip to create a consistent pressure point

So one can find the most consistent method and comfort for them

When aligning and fitting the grip hands' pivot point with the bow's pivot point

The area that forms a focused tension is the pressure area

The actual contact surface is not the entire palm

but the area connecting the pivot and pressure area on the grip hand

The angle and distance of the pivot and pressure point greatly affects the overall strength and direction of the bow itself

The grip hand's pivot and pressure point connecting line should generally be right on top of the bow grip's center line when gripping the bow

If these lines don't overlap

The amount of pressure and the direction of the bow will not be consistent

and the arrow will not be able to go in the direction it was aimed

If the wrist angles outwards and away from the center line

The pressure point is located on the outer left side of the normal position

so that the thumb takes the majority of the pressure

Thus, stable support of the bow can not be achieved here

As a result, the outwards pressure point applied on the left side of the grip

causes the direction of the force to not be maintained in a straight line

and results in a rightward (3 O'clock) reaction from the bow and bow arm during shooting

Additionally, in this situation, because one feels their grip is loose or out of position

one can become nervous and not confident about their shot adding additional unnecessary pressures which creates a unstable tense grip

On the other hand, if the wrist curves inwards and have the grip pressure inwards of the center line

the thumb, bow and bow arm will react to outwards during shooting

In addition, the bow arm moves inwards too causing clearance problems with the string and possibly hitting the arm during shooting

While it is important to make sure to align the hand with the center line when gripping the bow

The grip's vertical position also plays a big role in the stability and pressure of the grip

If the grip position is too high

The distance between the pivot and pressure point becomes too close forcing the archer

to rely on hand and wrist pressures and only use the top muscles of the arm

This causes the front shoulder to push upwards making it difficult to have strength and stability in the bow arm

By having a low grip position

The distance between the pivot and pressure point increases which also increases the general surface area contact with the bow

This creates more stability and a stronger utilization of shoulder and arm muscles of the bow arm

During set up, make sure to have the thumb's second and index's third segment pointed towards the direction of the target

while maintaining a proper wrist angle where having all of the knuckles are visible during full draw is recommended

Even so, rather than trying to fit into standard form based on pros and cons of high and low grip positions

It is preferable to set the grip shape and position based on what is most suitable for you

creating slight adjustments based on individual body structure or technique

When the bow grip doesn't comfortable allow an archer's ideal pressure point

one can use epoxy or other substances to adjust the pressure point and customize the area to fit a given archer's hand

For example, for archers who have a habit of bowing out their wrist

by applying substance on the left side of the grip to make it higher

An archer can correct the wrist angle easier

Chapter.3: Grip Strength

Point:

1.     Smooth and stable grip feeling

2.     A relaxed flexible grip to feel the grip pressures

It is common for most beginners generally to be afraid of dropping the bow

and will put a lot of tension in their grip to not do so

There are cases where even experienced archers can have excess tension in their grip

during nervous situations or from bad habit

Thus, when gripping the bow

It is important to only apply the minimum amount of pressure needed to hold the shape of the grip

and not apply excess force than what is necessary

If you apply too much pressure to the grip

The bow arm and shoulder will shake and will disturb the shot process

In addition, an archer can lose responsiveness to the shot process

and feeling of drawing the string when they are paying too much attention to the grip as there is too much tension

In order to create a comfortable and flexible grip

It will be helpful if you focus on the feeling of the grip when practicing and removing the grip force little by little each day

In addition, one can practice by making the grip shape when drawing with an empty hand and fixing the wrist shape and angle

and moving the fingers gently to remove any excess tension

And then practice again with the bow grip and repeat the process until perfected

Class : Review

We have talked about some points that are important to create a good grip

But the main goal is to match the pressure point in the hand with the center line of the bow grip

so that the left arm, wrist, and shoulder can

securely direct the bow towards the target

and allows the power and pressure point to flow in a focused direction

In order to maintain a flexible and sensitive sense of the pressure point

First, it is necessary to prevent the entire hand from becoming stiff as incorrect forces are applied to the grip

If the grip is tense even before draw begins and the hand is forcefully pushing on the pressure point

It will not be possible to feel the delicate transfer of pressure throughout the bow arm
