ดักฟังคนฟิลิปปินส์พูดถึงประเทศไทย
ช่วงนี้ผมเข้าเว็บบอร์ดการทหารของฟิลิปปินส์บ่อยครับ ...... สำหรับผมแล้ว กองทัพฟิลิปปินส์ โดยเฉพาะกองทัพอากาศน่าสนใจมากทีเดียว เพราะถ้าเทียบกับ ทอ. ไทย แล้วเขาได้งบน้อยกว่าไทย 4 เท่า แต่งานหนักกว่าไทย 4 เท่า เนื่องจากเขาต้องรบกับกลุ่มกบฏทุกวัน
แต่ก็ไปเจอกระทู้หนึ่งที่ไม่เกี่ยวกับทหารครับ เพราะกระทู้นี้เขาพูดถึงเมืองไทย ....... คนฟิลิปปินส์ออกไปทำงานนอกประเทศมากมาย จึงทำให้ไปหลาย ๆ ที่ก็จะสามารถเจอคนฟิลิปปินส์ได้
นี่คือความคิดเห็นของเขาส่วนหนึ่ง ที่มองประเทศไทยครับ ประโยคใน [ ... ] คือประโยคที่ผมใส่เองครับ

They don't have a 'feudal system' (to borrow a favorite term of the Left) here. This means no hacienda system in which a few families control the land. As I understand it, many average Thai farmers have their own farmland (usually the area is bigger than those owned by our kababayans in the provinces).Their King supported efforts to modernize agriculture (including sending bright scholars to--you guess it!!!--Philippine universities in the 50s and 60s).

Thailand also has excellent infrastructure (highways and bridges) that enable farm produce to reach the market, with little help (or interference? ) from middlemen.
They also grow their own vegetables and cultivate their own fishponds (every farm house has one, even if it's only a few square meters). The excess food they produce are brought to the local 'talad' (palengke).

Yup,the Thai's learned a lot from Philippines,and they improved a lot and now sad to say we are being left behind in terms of efficiency.
My Thai friend told me that caraboas were once imported from philippines for their agriculture,I even notice handtractors simillar to ours which I was also told that this technology was from Philippines.Noticed on their dining table their fish sauce that is also originally Filipino "patis" but now they are even exporting it.Some of my former colleagues classmates are Thais who studied engineering from Philippines now they are the one who are hiring our engineers.Have you been to Mah Tah Phut? Seen all their industrial factories (Oil,Gas and PetroChemical Plants) its just huge.
Its not only farm produce that is cheap,you can buy 2 by 130ml colgate toohtpaste within the range of your 100baht and that sometimes come along with a free 50ml toothpaste.Compare also the price of shampoo,soap and other thing for personal hygeine its a big difference from price at home.Medicine is also cheap,farmers can afford to buy pick-up trucks compare to Philippines only tricycles.
ใจความตอนนี้บอกว่า ไทยเรียนรู้จากฟิลิปปินส์เยอะ ได้เทคโนโลยีรถไถเดินตามจากเขา น้ำปลาก็มีต้นกำเนิดจากเขา แต่ตอนนี้ไทยทำน้ำปลาส่งออกแล้ว เพื่อนร่วมชั้นเรียนวิศวกรรมของเขาบางคนเป็นคนไทยซึ่งต่อมาดันกลับมาจ้างคนฟิลิปปินส์ซะเอง เขาพูดถึงมาดตาพุตว่ามีโรงงานอุตสาหกรรมปิโตรเลียมขนาดใหญ่ และชาวสวนไทยสามารถซื้อปิ๊กอัพได้ในขณะที่ชาวสวนเขามีแค่รถสามล้อ

One of the main drivers of the Thai economy is tourism, something the Philippines could match if only the National Government has the political will to implement the RP Tourism Master Plan. As such, our tourism operations rely mostly on local government support.

One big difference is that they have a royal family that looks after's the country's interests.
I was in Thailand in 2003, and I was amazed at how "royal patronage" (not sure of the term) of industries like wood carving, pewter, and jewelry production greatly benefited those industries. These were essentially projects of the queen. I believe this is what Imelda was trying to emulate when she backed the local entertainment industry and the shoe industry in Marikina.
It also helps that the Thais still respect the royal family, so there is always a foundation for nationalism.

You're right, the Thais do revere their royal family, especially their King. Quite different from how the British treat theirs, hehe.
In fairness, their King is respected not just because of his being a king but because he also contributed a lot to his subjects. He doesn't openly interfere much in politics (except in several instances like when he played 'referree' to two generals--one was the dictator at the time and the other was the one who launched a coup against the incumbent) and goes around the countryside consulting his subjects about ways to improve their lives. And he does act on those consultations.

Based on what I observed so far, one strong factor in Thailand's development is that element of authoritarianism in their daily lives. They have a revered constitutional king, a succession of military junta, and a strong sense of Asian values (obedience to elders and superiors, patriarchal system, group orientedness, etc.). You can observe it in all levels of their society. Even the public transport drivers follow traffic rules, believe it or not (when I first arrived here, what really disoriented me was the fact that I can only ride and get off the public transportation vehicles in designated places. Na-miss ko tuloy agad ang Pinas, hehehe.).

To connect Tourism with domestic consumption and exports, using a standard macroeconomic modelling exercise (this should be familiar to your colleagues):
TOURISM ---> dollars ---> more/better jobs ---> higher incomes ---> higher disposable incomes ---> STRONGER DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION ---> higher sales of products ---> higher demand ---> more factories ---> more products ---> more competition ---> higher efficiencies ---> more competitive products in the global markets ---> BETTER EXPORTS
According to studies, Tourism has one of the highest levels of trickle-down effects.
"In 2004,tourist expenditure in Thailand reached USD 13 billion, far more than any other ASEAN country." /3
Considering that 11.7 million tourists came into Thailand, that means on the average, each tourist spent more than a thousand dollars each. Compare that to the Philippines where they spent only about US$860.
And their great performance in Tourism has been consistent for decades, and is now part of our global pop culture.
To you and those Filipino expats in Thailand, I wish you and your families well as you pursue your careers in that great progressive country.
เขาพูดถึงเรื่องการท่องเที่ยว ว่ามันคือปัจจัยหลักที่ทำให้เศรษฐกิจไทยดีกว่าเขา โดยเขาร่างโมเดลคร่าว ๆ ของเรื่องนี้ให้ฟังตามหลักเศรษฐศาสตร์มหภาคครับ ซึ่งผลลัพธ์จากการท่องเที่ยวก็คือการส่งออกที่มากขึ้นตามที่เขาว่า แล้วบอกว่านักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเมืองไทยใช้จ่ายคนละพันกว่าดอลล่าห์ในขณะที่จ่ายแค่ 860 ดอลล่าห์ที่ฟิลิปปินส์
สรุปก็คือ นี่แค่มุมมองหนึ่งของเขาครับ นอกจากนั้นเขายังมองว่า เมืองไทย ค่าครองชีพต่ำ แต่คนไทย หาเงินได้มากกว่าเขา เลยมีกำลังซื้อสูง ไม่มีเหมือนฟิลิปปินส์ที่สินค้าอุปโภคบริโภคแพง
