บทที่ 8 การเชื้อเชิญและการตอบรับ
(Inviting & Accepting)
เมื่อคู่สนทนาเริ่มพูดคุยกันและรู้จักกันมากขึ้น ความสนิทสนมคุ้นเคยก็จะเริ่มมีมากขึ้นซึ่งย่อมจะนำไปสู่ความต้องการที่จะรู้จักกันให้มากยิ่งขึ้นไปอีก การมีกิจกรรมร่วมกัน เช่น การรับประทานอาหาร การเล่นกีฬา การไปดูมหรสพ ฯลฯ เป็นวิธีหนึ่งที่จะช่วยให้ทั้งสองฝ่ายได้รู้จักกันดีขึ้น โดยฝ่ายใดฝ่ายหนึ่งจะเป็นผู้ริเริ่มเชื้อเชิญขึ้นก่อนด้วยคำพูดที่เป็นทางการ (สำหรับผู้ที่ยังไม่สนิทสนมกันมากนัก) เรื่อยลงไปจนถึงคำพูดเชื้อเชิญที่เป็นกันเอง (สำหรับผู้ที่สนิทสนม) ตามลำดับดังนี้

I was wondering if you would like to join us for a meal.
We were wondering if you would like to go for dinner tonight.
I/We would like to invite you for dinner tomorrow evening.
Would you like to go out for lunch?
Do you feel like playing golf tomorrow afternoon?
What/How about a game of tennis after work?
How about going to a concert next week?
Why don’t you join us for a drink?
Why not come for a quick lunch?
ในกรณีที่ตอบรับการเชิญจะต้องกล่าวขอบคุณฝ่ายที่เอ่ยปากเชิญก่อนด้วยคำพูดต่อไปนี้ ซึ่งเรียงจากคำขอบคุณที่เป็นทางการไปจนถึงคำขอบคุณแบบกันเองสำหรับบุคคลที่สนิทสนมกัน (ในกรณีที่สนิทสนมกันจริงๆอาจละคำกล่าวขอบคุณนี้ได้ในบางโอกาส เช่น เมื่อถูกชวนเล่นกีฬา เป็นต้น)
