Report : Second successful civil disobedience demonstration against the coup

September 25, 2006 : 5:00 pm at Thammasat University, "Dome Dang" (Red Dome), a network of current Thammasat students & alumni from Thammasat University in coorporation with the Student Activity Information Center and Fah Diew Kan (same sky), a publishing house, organized a civil disobedience demonstration against the coup by setting up a political seminar (which was prohibited by Thailand's junta -- no more than 5 people allowed to talk about politics), called "Why we have to protest the coup".
Around hundred of observers and people joined the seminar.
Main speakers are Ms. Arunwana smikwatee a journalism student, Mr. Thanaporn Uewsakoon from Fah Diew Kan publishing house, Mr Methus Buashum , a graduate student at Chulalongkorn university, and Ms. Kanokrat Lertchoosakul, a political science lecturer at Chulalongkorn Univesity.
Here are their opinions :
Arunwana : Thai society do not believe in self-dependence, but depend on somebody with more power. Five years ago they felt good with Mr.Thaksin, but now they change their minds and turn to CDRCM (junta's name) again.
While the junta's announcement effects people's life, especially the prohibition on 5 people gathering. The junta describe their reason for the Nation's reconciliation, which I think it's a wrong concept. Different opinions do not mean to be divided.
Thanapol : The cancellation of the Constitution (1997 edition) by the junta will also cancel the constitutional court as well. But there are more than 300 sections bearing many organizations, military and 7th section should also be cancelled (but they are not). This signifies that the junta try to reserve their interests.
Methus : According to Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratkalin (head of CDRCM), they ask for 2 weeks, (but however I think that) they will setup an illicit prime minister and illicit cabinet-council which is considerd a softer technique. I, myself, do not believe that the junta trust in a democratics system. If they do why they have to draft a new constition (while they've just ripped a present one).
This is considered an unsincere manner. The most urgent issue is healing thai society's aesthesia. But this will not happen if we do not dismiss the junta first.
Kanokrat: The coup, (given a junta authority to) monopolize a political dicision power, which is a wrong concept of political reforming process. Concrete example is clearly seen in an appointment of AMLO (Anti - Money Laundering Office)'s advisor or a prime minister culling process, which were decided by only 2-3 persons without public hearing. This does not correspond to society appetence.

“Civil Disobedience in practice: Against the Coup”
“Civil Disobedience” is an intended violation of the laws, regulations, military or police orders which are considered illegitimate for some reasons, through open and peaceful means. It is a manifestation of the rationale that in certain circumstances human beings are morally committed to not obeying the laws made by others in the name of the “higher” law.

The Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM) has committed an act of ultimate violation of Democracy by staging the coup d’etat and rescinding the 1997 Constitution which guarantees fundamental rights of the Thai people, as well as issuing a series of decrees forbidding dissent (5th and 10th decree), prohibiting political gatherings (7th), arbitrarily enforcing laws (12th), and even appointing itself "supreme ruler” (16th).
The media that is supposed to present differing pinions, instead advertises the seize of power as a unique "Thai-styled Democracy”. Even academics, human rights advocates and “Democracy activists” whose principles deny the coup, have become mouthpieces for it with a simple excuse: “We have no choice.”
It is simply an irresponsible effort to turn a blind eye on the fact that the success of this seizure came from the power of arms, not that of the people, and that there is no equal space for differing voices.
We, including academics, students, reporters and people who care for our rights and human dignity, will publicly gather and speak up at Thammasart university—a significant place for Thailand’s Democracy.
We are aware that this gathering is a violation of the CDRM’s 7th decree that “prohibits political gathering of 5 people and more”. We are also aware of the “punishment of imprisonment of up to 6 months and/or fine of up to 10,000 baht” Our conscience simply tells us to do this act of “Civil Disobedience” against this illegitimate power.

และสังคมไทยก็ยังมีเสียงที่แตกต่างซึ่งไม่มีพื้นที่อย่างเท่าเทียมกันในการต่อต้าน
ดังนั้นการที่พวกเราซึ่งประกอบด้วย นักวิชาการ นักศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยต่างๆ สื่อมวลชน ตลอดจนผู้ที่รักและหวงแหนในสิทธิเสรีภาพและศักดิ์ศรีความเป็นมนุษย์ที่มีความหมายมากกว่าการบรรจุไว้ในกฎหมาย
มาร่วมชุมนุมและอภิปรายทางการเมืองอย่างเปิดเผยในสถานที่ซึ่งมีความสำคัญยิ่งกับประชาธิปไตยของไทย เพราะสถานศึกษาแห่งนี้ 72 ปีที่แล้ว นายปรีดี พนมยงค์ ผู้ประศาสน์การได้กล่าวถึงจุดมุ่งหมายในการสถาปนาว่า “มหาวิทยาลัยย่อมอุปมาประดุจบ่อน้ำบำบัดความกระหายของราษฎร ผู้สมัครแสวงหาความรู้อันเป็นสิทธิและโอกาสที่เขาควรมีควรได้”
การชุมนุมและอภิปรายทางการเมืองครั้งนี้ ้เราทราบเป็นอย่างดีว่าเป็นการขัดคำสั่งของประกาศหัวหน้าคณะปฏิรูป การปกครองในระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์ทรงเป็นประมุข ฉบับที่ 7 ที่ “ห้ามมิให้มั่วสุมประชุมทางการเมือง ณ ที่ใดๆ ที่มีจำนวนตั้งแต่ 5 คนขึ้นไป” รวมทั้งทราบดีว่า การฝ่าฝืน “ต้องระวางโทษจำคุกไม่เกิน 6 เดือน หรือปรับไม่เกิน 10,000 บาทหรือทั้งจำทั้งปรับ” แต่มโนธรรมสำนึกได้ปลุกให้เราออกมากระทำการ “อารยะขัดขืน” กับอำนาจที่ไม่ชอบธรรมในครั้งนี้
