#MissWorld2014 Rolene Strauss thanks fans for support
JOHANNESBURG - In a white and blue floral dress, Miss World Rolene Strauss was welcomed by hundreds of fans at OR Tambo International airport on Saturday morning.
She smiled and waved as fans cheered and welcomed her home back to South Africa.
Strauss is the first South African to win the title in 40 years and she thanks her fans and family for support.
Im proudly South African, I wouldnt be where I am today if it wasnt for South Africa, she said.
Born in 1992, Strauss thanked her family and friends from her home town in Volksrust and Bloemfontein.
I invite you to embark on this journey with me. I will not be walking in front of you but rather beside you, she said. Strausss mother Theresa said the South African welcome home was overwhelming. I wasnt as emotional about it in London when I saw her (Rolene) with the crown as here. This is home and her being welcomed here with all the music and the fans is very moving, she told eNCA.com.
Chris and Paula Matubatuba from Pretoria brought their three kids to the welcome event.
We saw her win on TV and we felt so proud, we wanted to be here to welcome her, said Paula.
Her husband Chris, said this was a proud moment for South Africa, Were a bunch of winners, this is really a highlight for us as a country, he said.
Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula said if Nelson Mandela were alive today he would be proud.
You (Rolene) reminded the world of what South Africa stands for: unity and forgiveness, he said.
