The media attention to the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, reached its peak two months ago. And honestly, I didn't pay even scant attention to the news at that momentabout which I now feel guilty. However as I read the NYT (again) today, I came across a report on the region that made me turn my eye to Darfur: Dina Kraft (an NYT reporter) reports on a story of Musa who fled the genocide in Sudan to Israel after his relatives had all been killed, only to find that he would be detained by Israel. (Please follow the link to learn why he, along with other refugees, was detained.)
Perhaps, I cant do anything much about the genocide, but I believe that I could help raise peoples awareness of the worsening situation through my Weblog. And I hope the following excerpt of Kraft's report could be a great tool of mine.
Musa, another detainee, is an orphan from Darfur who gives his age as "about 17" and keeps his eyes fixed on the floor as he talks. He has been on the run since gunmen shot and killed the aunt who reared him and set fire to the family hut, burning his young cousins alive, he says.
His long escape led him through Egypt and across the Sinai Desert into Israel, he said.
"I am all alone," he said. "I have no father, no mother, no relatives. I should have been dead a long time ago, but I've been running from place to place and now have ended up in prison."
