Dear Fans
I would like to thank you for the overwhelming amount of messages and letters you sent me this past week. Losing the Australian Open final certainly hurt, but it is important to move on and focus on the challenges lying ahead. I feel fine and fit and am eager to get back on court. I have enjoyed a few days off, which was great, and will soon be training again.
Thank you once again for supporting me and giving me such a lot of positive input! A lot of you have noticed that my website was slow after the final Down Under. The reason for that was the enormous amount of traffic more than we had ever experienced before. New hardware for the server has been ordered and will be installed as soon as possible so that you can enjoy rogerfederer.com without hassles in the future!
Q. Is there a feeling inside you that this is one that got away from you?
ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, well, I mean, kind of, you know. I mean, this is, sure, one of the matches in my career where I feel like I could have or should have won, you know.
But you can't go through your whole life as a tennis player taking every victory, you know, that's out there.
You've got to live with those, you know. But they hurt even more so like if you're that close, you know, like at Wimbledon or like here at the Australian Open. So that's what's tough about it.
But I have no regrets, you know. So it's all right.
Q. Did it hurt more because it could have been the 14th for you and you have to wait for another time?
ROGER FEDERER: Not really. I mean, honestly, no. I mean, it's more like, you know, in the first moment you're disappointed, you're shocked, you're sad, you know, then all of a sudden it overwhelms you.
The problem is you can't go in the locker room and just take it easy and take a cold shower. You can't. You know, you're stuck out there. It's the worst feeling, you know. So, I don't know, it's rough.
Q. Do you believe you still can beat him??
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, for sure. I didn't spend four and a half hours out there believing it [sic].?
This is where I won the Grand Slam to become No. 1 in the world back in 2004 really, so I've always had a special liaison with this tournament. The stage is set, basically, for a great match.
I hope we can live up to them like we did in Wimbledon.
I think it's going to be a close match. I think he's playing well, and he showed it throughout the tournament. [In the semi-final] his match was fantastic, so I'm looking forward to a great match and then hopefully equal Pete's record.
I thought he played a bit more aggressive with his backhand. I think he already tried to do that against me in Miami. Played a bit more flat, so the ball goes through a little bit more.
I really think he improved the returns. The second serves he takes more easily. I have the feeling he's improved at the net. He's a bit better mover.
Before he didn't run a whole lot for dropshots. Today I didn't play 25 dropshots, but I still felt he was running for every ball. He wasn't always doing that. That's also a big key to his game.
Q. You're getting to be a master of the challenges as well.
ROGER FEDERER: You need bad linespeople. They got to help you out.
Q. You had two on successive shots.
ROGER FEDERER: There was some really bad calls from the linespeople. The umpire missed them as well. I guess tonight is one of those nights you're happy there is a challenge system in place.
- I created a monster - a monster of expectations.
Q. Last year you said you had created a monster of expectations. Has that faded for you given how you played in the year since, or do you still feel that weight?
ROGER FEDERER: A little bit. I'm still surprised how quickly the mood swings with the media, with the fans, with everybody.
If I lose a set or two sets against Berdych, everybody is like, Oh, my God, he's not the same anymore. And then you beat Del Potro and everything is back to normal. It's just not the way it's supposed to be, I don't think.
You don't lose your edge that quickly. It's just not possible. I know I'm playing well. I feel good. I know sometimes you can always run into a player that's hot and you can lose. I've been able to control my opponents, and definitely got close against Berdych.
I still think I fought hard and deserved the victory in the end. Came up with two great victories now against Del Potro and Roddick,
and usually that's when I start playing my best: Towards the end of the tournament. I think this is where you should judge a great player.
Pete Sampras thinks Roger Federer not only will break his record for Grand Slam titles but could wind up with as many as 18 or 19.
Federer will try to tie Sampras mark of 14 majors by beating Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final Sunday. Sampras gives Federer a slight edge in what he calls a pick-em match.
Sampras also says in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Friday that if anyone is going to match or surpass his career total, it might as well be Federer, someone he considers a friend.
I really thought that 14 would be a number that would be very tough to tie and break, Sampras tells the AP,
but Roger just came along and dominated the game much more than I ever did.
