Roland Garros moving forward on retractable roof
PARIS (AP)Plans for a new retractable roof at Roland Garros are moving forward.
The roof is scheduled to be ready in 2011 to prevent rain delays at the French Open.
The French Tennis Federation chose an architect Wednesday, unanimously voting for Marc Mimram. Mimram is well known as the designer of the overpass that connects France and Germany across the Rhine River in Strasbourg.
The new roof at Roland Garros will cover the center court. The courts in a planned extension not far away from the main stadium are also set to get roofs.
Wimbledon is using a retractable roof on its center court for the first time this year.

Im broken. If it is not the knee, it is the shoulder, she said.
On the other hand, every day offers the freedom to do what she wants, a release from the relentless pressure that ultimately drove her into retirement at 25 while still ranked No. 1.
Despite a flurry of players briefly holding No. 1 and the impending return of fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters, Henin is happy in retirement and has no plans of a comeback.
It is truly a page that has been turned, Henin said Wednesday on the eve of the first anniversary of her retirement. It was 20 years of my life. Now life is something different.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion is now a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. She discussed the humanitarian crisis in eastern Congo with European Union commissioner Louis Michel in his headquarters in the Belgian capital on Wednesday.
Shes also versatile. On Thursday, she will star in the 12 works of Justine Henin on Belgian television, where she will train with favorite soccer team Anderlecht, strut the catwalk and display her cooking skills. Later, she will host a music show.
I have been living in this bubble for all these years and then you fall back into real life, she said.
That struck home in her UNICEF role during a visit in January to eastern Congo, once a Belgian colony and one of the worlds worst killing grounds over the past dozen years.
Women and children are often the main victims. For once, Henin was an unknown face among UNICEF officials on a fact-finding mission.
They didnt know who I was, so it had no impact on the contacts I had. That was great, because that was always a given in my life. When you are a public figure, there is always something awkward, she said.
Henin plans to concentrate her UNICEF work on vaccination campaigns for children.
She may be little-known in Africa, but commissioner Michel knows Henins face will draw more attention in the rest of the world.
Her contribution is a great antidote against selfishness, he said. When Justine Henin is a witness to all this, it is clear she has a much bigger impact on public opinion than I could have.
Asked who will win the French Open, where she is four-time champion, Henin returns a blank stare.
I havent really followed tennis anymore, she said of the tournament that begins May 24.
Henin recently picked up a racket to hit some balls with longtime coach Carlos Rodriguez. But she didnt want it to be misconstrued as the start of a return to competitive tennis.
I hasten to add, just to improve my condition and stay healthy, Henin said.
Federer Masters Blake Again, Murray Continues Title Defence For QF Berth
Former champion Roger Federer improved to 9-1 lifetime against American No. 14 seed James Blake with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-4 win in just over one hour at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open on Thursday. It was the pairs first meeting since Blake won their Beijing Olympics quarter-final encounter in August 2008. Federer improved to 23-6 on the 2009 ATP World Tour season and to 19-4 at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tennis tournament, where he clinched the 2006 title (d. Gonzalez) and finished runner-up in 2007 (l. to Nalbandian).
Blake, 29, reached his 23rd career final at Estoril last week when he failed to convert two match points in the second set against Spaniard Albert Montanes. The World No. 16 dropped to 15-10 on the season (6-4 on clay) and 2-6 at the Madrid tournament.
Federer will next meet sixth-seeded American Andy Roddick, who was gifted his place in the quarter-finals when No. 10 seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia pulled out ahead of the clash with a leg injury. Federer has a 17-2 record against Roddick. The pair has never met on a clay court.
Scot Andy Murray, who rose to a career-high No. 3 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings this week, earned a confidence-boosting 7-5, 6-1 win over 16th seed Tommy Robredo of Spain, the clay-court wins leader for the 2009 ATP World Tour season.
Murray, who will turn 22 on Friday, converted his first of eight break point opportunities in the 11th game of the first set when Robredo hit an acrobatic cross-court forehand long of the baseline. He swept through the second set with service breaks in the third, fifth and seventh games to complete his 31st win of the year (31-4 record). Robredo dropped to 21-6 on clay courts this season, highlighted by two titles at Costa do Sauipe (d. Bellucci) and Buenos Aires (d. Monaco).
"He's been to the second week of the French Open quite a few times and has won tournaments on clay," Murray said. "The win was good but the conditions were very tricky, the court at the end of the first set was really dry and it was really difficult to move. There was quite a strong breeze from one of the ends, but I didn't give him too many opportunities in the first set.
"I was a little bit tense early on. I had a lot of break points and didn't take them but I started to swing a bit freer in the second."
Murray is the defending champion at the fifth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the 2009 ATP World Tour season. He won the title in October 2008 over Gilles Simon on an indoor hard-court surface.
Murray will next look to improve his 3-0 record over fifth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who fought back from a 1-3 deficit in the third set to beat 11th seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 59 minutes. Del Potro, 20, improved to 23-7 on the season, highlighted by one ATP World Tour title at Auckland (d. Querrey). Murray beat No. 5-ranked del Potro on clay courts at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome in May 2008.

Quarterfinals day at the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open sees the top five men, the worlds No.1 and No.4 women, and some surprise packages face-off for semifinal spots.
Soon-to-be top-tenner Caroline Wozniacki looks to reach her fourth semifinal for the year when she takes on qualifier Vera Dushevina in the opening match on Manolo Santana Stadium on Friday.
Andy Roddick will be hoping that Madrids clay holds the solution to a puzzle that has perplexed him for nine years, namely how to beat Roger Federer.
World No.6 has conquered has conquered Swiss maestro Federer only twice in 19 meetings - a formidable psychological disadvantage to overcome for the most optimistic of athletes. Perhaps the American can find a glimmer of hope in the fact that in all those meetings, the two men have never before faced one another on clay.
Federer and Roddick are followed onto court by tournament top seed Dinara Safina and Alona Bondarenko from the Ukraine.
World No.1 Safina survived a scare against Lucie Safarova in the third round and she wont be taking her quarterfinal lightly.
I know her game well and she could be ranked a lot higher, said the 23-year-old. If I play my game it is difficult for people to read me so I will just focus on playing my game.
With just three seeds remaining in the womens tournament former world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo will be hungry to take advantage of the significant ranking points up for grabs in Madrid this week.
Now the world No.21, Mauresmo opens play on Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario Stadium at 1pm on Friday, taking on Agnes Szavay of Hungary.
No.3 seed Novak Djokovic continues to woo the fans on the Magic Boxs second show court, playing wildcard Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia for a spot in the semis.
They have played each other twice and Djokovic says hes feeling fit and ready for the match despite a heavy schedule that saw him win the Belgrade title last week.
I feel physically ok even though I have played many matches, said the world No.4. I have played a lot of matches on this surface but I guess its better to play more matches than less matches because I gain confidence which is really important in this moment.
After a tough season tournament No.4 seed Jelena Jankovic has cruised to the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open without dropping a set.
She has beaten her next opponent, Patty Schnyder, twice in three previous meetings.
In the first of the night matches Rafael Nadal, takes on No.7 seed Fernando Verdasco.
The world No.1 has a perfect record over his No.8-ranked opponent Verdasco having beaten the Madrid local in all eight of their previous meetings.
No.4 seed Andy Murray faces old sparring partner and No.5 seed Juan Martin Del Potro in the second of the night matches on Manolo Santana Stadium.
After some spicy past encounters Murray leads their head-to-head 3-0 and the pride at stake as the pair renew their rivalry on the main court should ensure an explosive end to a stellar days play in Madrid.
The Guinot Mary Cohr Masters, as it’s called, is scheduled for May 20-22 at the Paris Golf & Country Club, using the same clay and balls as Roland Garros. It’s a team competition, with two teams of six players competing against each other, led by “internationally renowned captains.”
Two best-of-three set matches a day from 1:30 p.m. onwards will commence. Each player will play once only during the three-day tournament and the two captains will challenge one another on the Friday just before the presentation of the trophy.
