Thailand 7th International Kite Festival
On March 23-24, 2002 Tourism Authority of Thailand hosted an international kite festival at Somdej Phra Suriyothai Camp, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. This was the first time the festival was held outside of Bangkok. It was a sheer delight. The field was excellent with plenty of room for Peter Lynn to fly his largest inflatables and room left over for all the other international guests. On two other separate fields the Thais flew their tradtional kites in competitions and for the first time on a third field, the Thais held a sport kite competition.
Guests came from many Asian countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan. Australia and New Zealand were well represented, as well as Austria, Sweden, England, and the US. In all about 50 international guests flew to almost 50,000 spectators. The winds were light, yet sufficient to hold many of the largest kites in the sky.
Ron Spaulding organized several Thai Kite Festivals in the past and was on hand to help us. We are very thankful for his help and knowledge. Ron's work with the Thai Kite Heritage Group, has been especially important fostering traditional Thai kite flying. He has graciously allowed us to post the information he produced in an excellent brochure which explains the history and rules of traditional Thai kite competition.
