Lob wedge
Golfers either love or hate their lob wedge. For a long time, I despised mine...especially from tight lies in the fairway. However, when I finally learned how to use it, my scoring went down immediately! Here's what I learned from countless hours practicing, listening to professional instruction and the aggregate of my newsletter subscribers:
A typical lob wedge has about 60 degrees of loft so getting the ball in the air is not a problem. One of the biggest mistakes most people make is playing the ball too far forward in their stance. When this happens, your room for error is tiny and you absolutely have to hit the ball purely. True, the ball may go higher, but the execution has to be flawless. To create a more consistent pitch shot, you should firstly move the ball back in your stance by about 4-5 inches and watch what happens. Obviously, the ball will have a slightly lower trajectory but you will be able to control distance and landing infinitely better. Trust the club's loft to do the work and be sure not to get the hands so far forward of the ball that you are knocking the shot down.
Secondly, the club works best when you strike the ball somewhat swiftly and crisply. If you go too slow, the flange will not respond accordingly and you will make any lob shot difficult. What you want to do is pretend you are lighting a match. Imagine you are striking a wooden match against a matchbox and you get my drift. Quickly with some snap to it because a gentle stroke will not get the job done. If you do this correctly, you will impart the proper spin on the ball and get better shots.
